This weekend while towing my 5th wheel(15k weight) I had gone 120 miles with no issues. I came to a stop sign and once I took off as normal, the truck (auto trans) shifted into second gear and about 13-18 lbs of boost it turbo bark and completely lost power about 3 times in a row. I eased off the pedal and it stopped, eased back into it and truck shifted to third then the TC locked in third I was at 55-60mph, boost was around the same and it did it again multiple times. I slowed down to 40mph and it stopped. I pulled over and called my dad to have him to my 5th wheel home. I drove the truck and kept the boost under 8 and drove at 60mph home(another 150 miles) and had no issues.

I figured with no boost and no load it would drive fine, but I am trying to figure out the turbo bark under load and power loss. Any help is appreciated.

I have had turbo bark while shifting under load and thought that was normal as it would bark but no lose power. Truck has 170,000 miles and mods are in my sig.

Did you try eliminating the Edge?

Have you inspected the turbo?

Turbo bark is not normal, too many times and you will damage the turbo.

While they shouldn’t create it, the added volume of the intercooler and horn can exacerbate the issue. I’m guessing both those mods were to reduce the higher EGT’s the Edge caused?

IMO Turbo Bark is a symptom of the loss of power problem. I would check the easy stuff first: clogged air filter, loose turbo clamp or blown off boot on the intercooler. Then I would check the fuel: aka suddenly not enough fuel shutting down the engine and barking the turbo. Fuel condition and fuel filters: Water coming out of the filter drain? Does it smell like gasoline? Leaking or blown off boots make all kinds of noise as you feel like you hit a wall on power loss.

In cold weather you could have had a fuel gelling problem.

The edge was on level one tow mode. I did not try and turn it off. I checked the turbo and it has no play. I did change out all the boots. The boot from turbo to intercooler hot side looked worn but I could not see light thru it. Yes the intercooler and horn was to try and bring down EGT. Never had the edge over level 2 but it makes the EGT GI up. I am thinking of going to a smarty SR and get use the edge for gauges. Air and fuel filter are good. I am going to add an airdog 165. I was wondering if you can test the waste gate. I will block the hose off for the wasre gate and see if it holds boost.

I have had issues with starting once the engine is hot( I live in Vegas). I tested the rail and injectors by filling the cylinder and measuring fuel while timing the flow and everything flows in parameters. That's why I am thinking of adding air dog 165 and a new cp3.

Thanks for the help. From searching I found possible boots, waste gate, turbo, or refueled. Anything else I should look at?

Personally I would look at the FASS, fewer failures, lower flow (better for the filters they run), and better fuel heat options.

Edge's do run hot realtive to other tuners. Smarty is good, custom tunes on a MM3 are better.
