My turbo (HX35/40) started making a weird sound, especially noticeable above 10 PSI. It sounds like a bad amplifier ground, along with the normal turbo whine.

I had just installed the smarty (#8) the day before and had the Juice on level 3x2, I was towing 6k when I first noticed it. I am waste gated at about 34 psi.

It still builds pressure, and may boost faster than before it was making noise.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Do I need to rebuild the turbo?

thanks

For what it's capable of, the turbocharger is a relativley simple unit. Take your rubber intake hose off and examine the shaft, blades and housing to see if it turns freely and if the baldes are touching the inducer. You'll see marks. Try and turn the impellar by hand. Check the play in the shaft, too.

will check it tomorrow.

I was concerned, because the whine of the turbo was twice as loud and had more of screech to it.
