Turbo Saver

Is there anything out there that is called a turbo saver?

I seen this on a truck, but did not get enough information on it.

It allows you to turn off the ignition and remove the keys, then after a period of time the engine would shut down. Is this a good thing to have or is it just a sales pitch?

Theres two devices that do what you ask. The TurboDiesel Lifesaver is sold at Geno's Garage, and plugs right into the ignition harness, and you have a selection of 1 to 5 minutes of runtime, set it, turn off key and lock the doors, truck automatically shuts off. The second device is made by Isspro, and I know DIS sells them (not sure who else) but its wired into a pyrometer thermocouple and it shuts down when it reachs a predetermined temperature.

Is this a good thing to have or is it just a sales pitch?

Cooling down the turbo to about 300 degrees before you shut off the engine greatly extends the life of the turbo. You do this by idling the engine. If it is shut down hot without idling, the oil "bakes", or "cokes" on the bearings. Eventually, this leads to premature failure.

You can achieve exactly the same thing by just sitting in the truck and letting it run for awhile before you pull the key out. But many people don't want to wait; if you're one of those then a turbo-lifesaver will allow you to have your cake and eat it too.

So, it's not a sales gimmic - it really does something good. But you can achieve the same end result by just not turning off the key as quickly as you might otherwise like to.

When the fuel tank is larger than the bladder it's a god send not to have to sit in the seat while the turbo is cooling down or leave it running with the keys in it while fueling at the only fuel stop ( seedy at best) in a hundred miles. The Turbo Lifesaver from Genos will shut down the engine and lock out the starter if the brake is applied while the timmer is running, it can also be interfaced with an alarm if you have one. You don't have to baby sit the truck during cool down.
