I had a little time on my hands this weekend so I threw this together. Seriously I've been thinking about this since July as I knew I needed more air, I have been gathering parts for a few weeks and fabbing what I could to make the install easier, I can tell you this is not for the faint at heart and I used all of my tools, mostly the chop saw, zipper wheel, air dremel and Tig! A special thanks to Piers and Al for the (Big)Turbo and Manifold but mostly for all the answers and taking my calls. Thanks to Mark Kendrick for the final push to go for it, and to all of those who posted pictures of setups as it answered allot of questions. The test drive is in and I'll tell you it's real hard to control the boost that it makes, when I started testing I could make 60 PSI at half throttle but I have it at 58 right now in O/D lockup, EGT's are way down but I can't really tell how much! Before I could go from 600-1500 EGT in 3 seconds, in testing it would level out at 1400 but that was at 110 MPH... . white knuckle ride when I saw the Speed O. Spooling is real good but controllable and it will make 45 PSI at 1/4 throttle... . think it need a wastegate! Speaking of that, I set mine up like Mark's except I dump it outside(Cool Idea of were to put the Gate) I'm still cleaning things up right now(painting pipe ect) and will change the intake so I can put the Battery back in(ran out of 4" pipe) I'm not doing this as a job, I have one! Just did this for me. Piers's setup's with the manifold are better and cleaner than mine but flippin the center section is the easiest.

I came back home and put . 080 or so more plate in it with not allot of seat of the pants improvement(spools quicker) but that's fine. I did allot of throttle testing even from stopped idle just Jammed it and took notes, it gets 20-25 PSI real quick then just about a half second later(big turbo spools) and it's at 55. Now power break it for 5 seconds to 800 or so EGT and it's a different world when you Jam. The power is smoother than I expected you just really have to watch the throttle. (Valet switch next)

P. S. I wish I had a way to post a recording at 2500 RPM;) way cool.

Wish my wife... I mean truck could have twins lol. Nice setup Jim, did seat of the pants feel any different after the test drive?? I thought the intercooler blew at 50 psi, or is that just a rumour?? Anyway, Great job!! Is that 2 HX-40's or what??

I put up three more pics, two of the wastegate and one of a tube, most of you were talking about blowing tubes off, what I did was cut a 1/2 piece of the same tube being used then cleaned it up and split it so I could slip it on the end of the tube then tig'd it all up so now if it blows the tube of it will tear up stuff :D As for the intercooler if it blows then I'll know the limit but I hear what your saying. The turbo(top) is the stock 35 with a 16 non-wastegate housing(I had this already) the bottom one is the same as everyone else but it has the Piers treatment just like the 40's.

twins

Looks great Jim, I do admire craft work. Keep up the great work. Do you think that when you get the engine just where you wont it that a 91 or 93 % converter is in order.

Do you have any idea how the camshaft from Piers might complement the twins as for as spool up?

It take a guy who has some talent to make and set up some twins and courage to go through with it.

best regards Jim K

Jim, James and I have been talking about changing over to a 91R converter, I don't think my truck would like a 93R like Eric's! 12V's are just not as punchy out of the hole, plus he has a cam. Yep I've been thinking about a cam but haven't talked to Piers about it with this setup. As far as the talent I guess it's ok but I will more than likely build a new down pipe this weekend to make it cleaner (it's ok now just could be better) but I need to put the wastegate pipe into it, just wanted to wait and see if I liked it this way. I have the stuff for the exhaust now so i'll work on that today so i can drive it to work and around this weekend, I don't have to tell you how loud a 5" is straight, dumping at the bed:mad:

Those of you who are wondering, I'm using a BHAF(8" version) and the turbo noise is louder as you see my filter is against the firewall, I drove at 70 the other day during testing at it doesn't seem that bad cause boost is 1-2 PSI but at 15 PSI it sings loud. I'll report later on some better info but drivablity is the same as a single..... maybe just ever so slightly more lag and I would like to try a 18 housing on the 35.

Jim

You need a better flowing air filter. You will run into issues at high boost if you don't.

I put my filter aiming for the battery up front. . battery not there:D

Later,

Mark

The lag is just a little bit more if you go from a standing/idle stomp as I said before, if you spool it just a little it will just blow the tires off at 10 feet out. If you roll into the throttle like normal driving boost will get to 45 at just a little throttle. Keep in mind that I haven't driven but about 20-30 miles, I won't drive it to work till tomorrow as right now it has open an Open 5" exhaust dumping under the bed and is annoying to drive. Let me get some miles behind it and I'll give you some feed back.
