Volvo Penta has been doing this for two years now on there marine engines. I just spotted this thread.

I have even looked at the engine at trade shows.

The supercharger has a clutch much like the one on your A/C unit and at low RPM's the clutch kicks in and runs the S/C at lower RPM's were the turbo will not work as well under light load or under acceloration.

When up to speed there is a flap in the airbox that cuts the air from the S/C and the unit is shut off.

Here is there example of how the unit works.

Supercharging

The engine is supercharged with a mechanically driven compressor and an exhaust turbocharger. The compressor – fitted with silencers – supplies compressed air at low engine speeds and while accelerating. The turbo takes over when the charging pressure has reached the proper level. The interaction of compressor and turbo produces high torque over the whole

speed range and this contributes to cleaner exhaust gases and fuel economy giving excellent acceleration and driving characteristics.

Cat engines

The new Cat engines do not use egr. They use twin turbos and acert with is a fuel cycle that can inject fuel up to 7 times in one compression cycle. They also use a Catalyst that is built into the muffler. To cool the charge air down they use a air to water aftercooler before it goes into the air to air.
 
The air to water cooler on an ACERT engine is between stages of turbocharging. We had a C15 ACERT at school for a while. If you ever get to mess with one, make sure and to an injector test. Lots of shaking and black smoke coming out the exhaust.
