Competition Advice on External Wastegate on Twins

Getting ready to build twins for a 2002 HO 6spd he tows alot. With Mach3s and a EDGE drag box using a HX-35 and HT3B 22cm housing. Has anybody ran a 22cm? Sould I go get a 26cm THANKS for input. .

I am running a 22 cm. Seems to work great. I have never ran another set of twins so I can not compare. Very fast spool, easily makes 60 psi and cut my EGT's about 300 degrees.

Dennis

I think it would depend on how big his injectors are... with my 26 housing i hit 40psi on my 3B and it falls back to 38psi or so. Thats right at the edge at just shy of 600hp. A 22 housing would overspeed the 3B IMO,unless I was running less fuel.

I've got a set of J. R. 's twins. An HX-35/12, and a 3B/22, and it runs darn well.

I'm running Don's 4. 8's. I put down ~420RWHP on the stock turbo and 1700*EGT. With J. R's twins I'm running 546RWHP, and 1475* EGT MAX.

I don't know my boost, but what I can do, is tell you it pegs my 35Lb boost gauge pretty hard :-laf

I could only tow at 5/8 throttle with my comp box off before, and now, (I haven't towed yet), My EGT's are safe with my box on untill 7/8 throttle.

I'd do it. Great towing setup. it's not snappy quick like a single charger, but once that 3B gets up and rollin' it goes nicely.

Most people like the 23 but end up going to a 26 for a little better topend, you have a 35 on top so the bottom end should be fine, I've run the 26 but never the 23 and I never would... ... ... just an opinon!

Jim

Thanks Jim for your input. . This 3b exhaust housing is a 22 single inlet. The 23cm housing are they divided inlet?

This is a little off topic but I thought I would ask on this post. I purchased a HTB2/64 from High Tech Turbo a few months back for my GMC conversion. I went with it because it the class I was aiming at to pull with it I had to run a single charger. I have since lengthed the truck (reg-cab into a crew-cab) and weight wise I will be over the 7500Lbs now so I am thinking about going all out or as all out as I can horsepower wise, so I am thinking about twins.

My question is does anyone know if I could possibly run my HTB2/64 for the smaller charger? The exaust side of the turbo is a 12. From what I have been hearing from pretty well everyone is that this turbo flows better and spools faster than a HX40 and is very close to HX35. If I were to put it with a 3B do you think it would work or no?

Thanks in advance... Ryan

Don't know about that HTB2 but I would think it would work fine, it's not that big of a turbo, everyone had talked it up on the net and when I got to see one it was no big deal in size except that guy that had it (12cm version) was still having EGT troubles (over 1500) at 400 HP.

Thanks for the very fast reply's guy's!!!! I thought it would work well for twins but was told by some that it never would but I trust you two guys!!!!! I would love you have you build me a set but there was one thing I promised my self 14 months ago when I started this project... . I am going to do everything my self from engine work (other than o-ringing the head) to the paint and body work!!!! Up untill this point I havn't needed anyone elses labour for any fabrication and although I would love to have a set built buy someone like your self but I would really like to tackel it my self. Would you be able to hook me up with parts though if I need any??? Also, can you tell me what the 3B came stock on? I work for a trucking company up here and can get pretty well anything if I have part #'s for cost.

Thanks again... Ryan

For making big HP I think Jim is right on but for towing the 22 works pretty well. I am actually thinking of putting a little bigger turbo on top to see if I can get the 3b to work a little harder while towing. Right now the 3b is only making 20 lbs at 50 lbs of total boost with the waste gate shutoff on the HX-35-14 for towing. If I open the wastegate on the 35 while towing it just won't make enough boost. What are your thoughts on this anyone?

With the waste gate opening at 18lbs on the 35 the 3b will make 30 lbs at an overall boost of 55 lbs.

I've got some gauges on order, and need to get my WG settled out. I'm actually have my 54' gooseneck hooked up to my truck right now.

Towing empty (7,500Lb, trailer weight, 14,000Lbs total), I could easily accelerate with traffic with only a light haze out the stacks, 35PSI, and 1,100*F.

I'll get some more gauges soon, so I can measure pressure between the stages, and actually know my overall boost. I also need to get my wastegate setup properly as it's open to soon, and I don't think it opens enough on the top-end.

My 3B/22 sounds like it's running real hard at 15PSI when towing if you give it time to spool. At 35PSI overall, it's lightning quick towing or not.

Merrick

BTW, my 22 is a single scroll exhaust housing. (single throat), however you say it.

I have the exact same setup. They do work very well with my DD (Extrude Hone) Stage 3's. I too see 60 PSI on a regular basis.

Merrick,

I have access to a free HT3B/22 new in the box. Do you think 22 would be too tight for a 3rd gen primary? Any ideas on what would be a good secondary for an HPCR? Bare with me as I'm learning as fast as I can.

Richard,

The 22 housing might be a little small for your 3rd gen. The stock heads on a 3rd gen flow as well as a Stage 1 p&p from Piers.

I would go for a bigger housing. Something around a ~32 would be good.

A ~40/3B would be good.
