Hi Ian,

Thank you, its appreciated! I am exploring my options, but will get in touch when I figure out what to do. So far I have been told that this is a "stuff happens" more than anything else. Who knows, but I would be a fool to think that the bombs did not play a role. If nothing else, they are keeping me out of the warrentyship. Oh well, just have to roll with it and get 'r fixed.

How about a piston swap in Toledo?? :-laf

Chad,

I think you said it best ;)

Bill :D

I spoke with several shops today and I have more info. I might be able to clean up the cylinder without pulling the motor, which is still my preference. VP timing was most likely off because of the screwed up key, hence the louder knocking coming from it. The head is most likely scrap, injectors need inspection but should be okay, turbo needs inspection but also might be okay. Next steps are to try and get a machinist from a local shop to stop by the house and take a look at the cylinder, and make some more calls.

Thanks for the support guys, the phone is ringing and messages are flying. It is very much appreciated.

a true bummer R-N-R. Heat is what takes out the seats most commonly. they start as cracks and then well... . you know.

as far as the head goes, I'd take it in and have it checked out. you can have all new seats and guides put in and mill it flat or take your chances on a used or remaned head for about the same cost. if not going that route I'd buy a new head if you can find one.

Thanks for the feedback and input guys!

I am ready to take care of this but I have a few new options available to me now, so just have to decide what to do.

I am feeling a bit chicken on honing the cylinder without pulling the motor. Why is due to 1) having the best tools for this job, such as the hone and gauges 2) although I have some excellent help, the most experienced of us don't machine diesel motors on a regular basis 3) debri from the polishing getting into the oil stream or missing cleaning up the other parts such as the crank, etc... 4) oversizing the cylinder

So, I am almost convinced to have a shop repair the block. I just need to decide which shop and how much work to have them do.

Ready to start!

Well, I have decided to pull the motor at home, take it to a machine shop to fix the cylinder(s) and replace the pistons, then re-install the motor.

I have a cherry picker for pulling the motor tomorrow, Sun the 4th. I expect to start in the morning, pick up the CP at 1pm, and have the motor out by evening.

GraphicMan, CTDgirl, and FMcClaren are coming over to help out Oo. I6dzl and IColeman are tied up this weekend :{ Proturbo99, ready to help pull a motor on a holiday weekend with zero notice? :-laf

Still a bit on the fence with 1) sleeve/bore #1 only, replace #1 & #4 pistons or 2) bore all six cylinders and replace all the pistons

Also still on the fence over head repair verses replacing it.

Need to source a head (?), check turbo, make decision on testing/replacing injectors, make decision on HRVP testing.

Also need to decide on studs, o-ring, exhaust manifold

Thanks to all for your input and help!!!

Bill

Bill

Wish i was closer I would have helped out.

As far as studs, o-ring, and manifold if you have the coin to do it now your better off.

Well FMCClaren, Graphicman, CTDgirl, and ProTurbo99 spent a beautiful Sunday to help me pull the motor. PT99's experience with this job made it infinitely easier for all of us. I definately would not attempt this without everybody's support.

I6dzl and IColeman..... you were missed!

I know I know... I wanted to be there but by the time I came from the other side of the state it would have been too late :( BUT Ill be there for the install count on it! heck just to gain the knowledge of how to remove/install the big beast is worth the trip

Ian

I got to hear my truck run today! Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

There is a good chance it will be ready for me to pick up tomorrow! :D

Yes he got to hear it but it has a darn nock noise  I wonder why? Well I better hang onto it a little longer? :{ What do I do with all the extra parts now? I'll put all the extra parts in the bed of your truck ok Bill :--)
