Does anyone know what is added to ULSD, as a lubricant? Maybe I can stop using P. S. John

I wouldn't quit using an additive, but would use whichever additive you trust, but do use one with proper lubricity. Check the latest issue of the TDR where they discuss the ULSD; at work we've gotten lots of information from the FI Manufacturers warning of leaks, clogged filters, injector and pump failures from the lack of lubrication, especially if the final distributors do not add it to their fuel. Cummins even has an early warning bulletin out about leaks from the use of ULSD. The pipeline companies and some fuel transport companies that also haul jet fuel cannot haul ULSD with lubrication as it contaminates the tanks and lines thus contaminates the jet fuel, and the FAA won't allow it. I've heard of no standards being issued for the lubricity additives that the fuel distribution networks use, or at least we haven't seen any published. I'd say they're trying to keep this information private at present. Then, in blended fuels, they will have to have Ultra Low Sulfur #1 to blend with the #2 to winterize the fuel, or use some other additive that will raise the price. It could get interesting when cold weather hits!

I wouldn't stop using an additive either. Remember the distributer is going to add the "minimum" amount of lubricant to meet spec's.

You guys crack me up. Can you say **PARANOID**?? I put 20,000 miles on my pickup in the last 5 weeks. I bought fuel in TX, MO, IN, VA, NJ, TN, OK, NM, UT, ID, OR, CA, and AZ. No additives ever. No noticable change in foaming. A slight loss in mileage, prolly due to winter blend. Drained the fuel filter housing into a qt jar when I got home and not one speck of crud or water. The filter wasn't even hardly colored. I can't believe how fast internet myths become "reality".

New to The Diesel monster!! So will this make a difference between what engine you have the 12v or the 24v?? will either one of these be any better off with ULSD?

You also have a '97 with a real injector pump. Some of us with a VP44 get a little worried when it come to fuel lubricity which is the main concern with ULSD (my main concern anyway).

+1 on Stanadyne ("Performance Formula"). Been using it for years in my '95 CTD. Still using it now with ULSD. No problems. And I like the single-serving bottles that treat 30 gallons. Shop around on the web for it... its price varies a lot from distributor to distributor, and some offer free shipping.

the ulsd that has started here hasn't changed in color from the regular diesel, still the same, yellowish/green... more like Mt. Dew color as always.

WBusa,

Just a thoguht for you, the small bottles cost a LOOOT more per ounce than the 16 oz ro 1/2 gallons. Take your small bottles and refill them from a 1/2 gallon jug and the cost per tank goes waaay down!

Now why didn't I think of that (slapping forehead). I suppose maybe because Stanadyne seems to have anticipated this... them bottles' caps leak like crazy after I've broken the foil seal, whole cab starts smellin' like diesel (which ain't necessarily bad, unless you're my wife). I'll just have to look for a rubber washer that fits into the cap. Thanks for the tip.

If you have a gas engine'd vehicle, and use the Stanadyne Injector Cleaner that comes in the 8oz white bottles, then you can dry them out and use them. They are small enough to fit nicely in an old military ammo can with the seal around the lid, and I refill mine from the 5 gallon and 1/2 gallon jugs. Works like a charm, and the ammo can helps to keep the bottles upright, let alone no smell in the back of my truck!

We do this with a lot of folks, we sell them a couple of 16 oz bottles and a 1/2 gallon at the same time and they just keep refilling the 16 oz over and over!

Yeah, this is a great idea. I'm actually thinking about purchasing a 5 gallon bucket of the Amsoil Cetane boost. I think that with my preferred customer account, I can get for less than 150. I've been running Power Service, but haven't taken any super long trips. If I do, I generally don't add anything. But having a few bottles stored in the truck may be a good idea.

Haven't noticed any difference in mileage or foaming here. Been running some Power Service mainly to make sure I don't get waxing of my filters as I have been in some real cold stuff this week. I'm more prone I think running this big tank in the back with a filter hanging right up there in the cold.

I liked the power of the Hemi, but my wife hated the mileage and the fact that she had to use Mid Grade gas. (that still was cheaper than diesel now) Our new Mega cab has the benefits of the Durango, and I still get to keep my Cummins diesel truck. It's a win-win situation for us... .
