I got my rebuilt trans from standard trans and had a local shop intall it and clutch, Pressure plate etc.

Trans shifts good, sounds good but they forgot to put in new rear trans housing seal. ( Old dried out on was still in, and cracked up etc). I lost a quart of liquid gold ( Castrol Syntorq).

Pulled the d-shaft etc. put new seal in and all is good now.

Question's now are:

How hot should a rear end get? When I was taking the drive shaft out (and weeping over all the syntorq splattered all over the frame) I put my hand on the Dana 80 4:11 rear end and it was HOT to the touch. I could keep my hand on it for 2-3 seconds, then i had to take it off.
I was not towing before this, only empty on a test run. . I had drove about 60 miles,40-60MPH all level, no hills etc

I changed the rear fluid to 75W90 Red Line synthetic High performance fluid right after i got the truck. ( Couple months ago)

Should I put 75-140 regular fluid back in it?

2nd question:

I put my foot into the accelerator and the engine went to 2800 RPM with no hesitation. Is this normal for a 12V 1997? I thought it had a govenor at 2500?

Thanks for your help in advance. Ed

Dont know about the rear end but it sounds a littl hot to me, how long a drive B4 touching it and what speed? The RPM falls off at 2800-2900 on 12 valve motors and starts defueling about 2600.

I was wondering about the RPM's on my truck too. The thing runs straight up to 3000 in any gear. It doesn't seem to decrease the fuel either. Just pulls all the way to 3 grand. I like it that way though #ad

I bought it used so I don't know what had been done to it.

Your Dana 80 has a 3/4 NPT fill plug. Go to Home Depot or some parts house and get a hollow brass hex head plug. Drill and tap the center of the plug for 1/8 NPT and put in a temp gauge sender. Then you can tell what the real temp is. Or, get the Mag Hytec pan for it and put the sender in the top of it where the hot oil coming off the ring gear hits it. Temp depends on lube, backlash, etc. I have had good results with 0. 008" backlash and Torco 75-140 syn or LE607 lube. If recall correctly, I have not seen my D80 go over about 200 deg.

A rough rule of thumb states "If you cannot keep hand contact, the temp exceeds 130F"

Nothing fool proof but just a hint to apply Kentucky Windage.
