Guy's I am trying to decide on a new set of tires. Truck is an 06 QCSB 4x4, stock front suspension, and the 3 blocks removed from under the rear axle (the 3 spacers total 1 . 25").

So the truck sits almost level, the back now has 1" more wheel well gap than the front. I want to go with a larger tire to fill the wheel well gap.

I will be using the stock 17"x8" rims and the tires Must be "E" rated.

I have narrowed it down to the BFG A/T 285/70/17 "E" (32. 8) and the Toyo M/T "E" in either a 295/70/17 (33. 5) or the 285/75/17 (34. 1).

I would like to see pictures of trucks with any of these tires on them (preferably with stock suspensions).

There are some treads on here, but they are several years old.

Any opinions or recommendations are welcome.

Thanks

Well I would disagree with the "BFG all the way" just to many cases of DW and blown tires. I know lots of people really like them and have been good tires for them. But you just seem to hear lots of other people having a bad time with them? There will be lots of opinions and mine is to go with the Toyo. I ran Toyo MT 35s on my 03 with all stock suspension. Currently have Toyo 285/75/17 on this truck. The next set will most likely back to the 35 Toyo MT. They are a very tough tire. My ATs do have a bit of a left pull. The MT did not seem to pull one way or the other. They are stable while towing and work well when aired down if you want to play in the dirt. The only complaint that I have heard from the Toyos is that the AT seems to wear pretty quick. I only have about 15k and a few wheeling trips. I would go Toyo MT 285/75 they will fit the truck nicely and be a very good tire, 10 ply and rated around 3,500lbs

Interesting, my 285/75/17 AT's measured only 32. 25" tall mounted on the truck.

The size of a tire as represented by the manufacturer is only an estimate. There can be upwards of a half an inch in difference even between different tires from the same manufacturer.

The A/T's are shorter than the M/T's.
I got the info on all tires directly from the manufactures websites.
Plus the weight of the truck squats them some, did you measure them mounted off the truck?

I can't believe no one has any pics!
I really wanted to se the 285/70/17 BFG A/T's to compare wheel gap with the Toyo's.

Yes and in fact, it was the front tire I measured. Come to think of it, why did I measure the front??

It must be pretty close though, the speedo is only 1 MPH slow after adjusting for the new tires.

Go to the thecarlisuspension.com dodge blog section Baja pre run the white truck with shell on is 285/75/17 Toyo AT
I had a slight left pull with my AT's do to the 2. 0 Fox ss. I had to deflate the ss entirely in order to kill the pull. Conversely,my Toyo MT's induce a pretty severe right pull, which enables me to run my ss at 175#. Steers great now.

Andy, which brand shell is that? Great time you guys had. Good thing the rain didn't make it.

how do you get DW from tires... that is b. s and bfg are great tires and most people say the same... . your always going to have a bad experience with any brand... ... . Im sure you can with micheline tires also... and i like them too

In all fairness, there were MANY posts about DW showing up with BFG tires in the early days of 3rd gens but I think those were with the load range "D"s and not the newer "E"s.

Ahhhh, don't forget in the early days, there were few manufacturers who made the 17" truck tire. DW was new news then, and the BFG was one of the more aggressive tires available, so about the time DW became a problem, the BFGs were the second or third set of tires on the truck.....

As a side note, I've had extremely good service out of the BFGs, Toyo's, and Michelin's. The Michelin's seem to dry-rot here in the heat a lot faster than anything else, but if you run 'em off in two years, it's not an issue. The Toyo's I've sold/run the most of, mostly due to price and availability, and they've been the best overall brand of tire I've ever sold/owned. I hear a lot of complaints from some people about the mileage on the Toyo's, but I've never had any complaints from my customers. They almost always make at least 35k miles before I get nervous or run a stump through one. I've got several customers that make 50+k on their MTs, although I can't seem to get that much out of a set. The best BFGs I've seen made 48k, in 315/70R17.

Tire height is calculated as:

((aspect x ratio) x 2 \ 2540) + rim diameter

E. G. 285x70x2\2540+17=32. 7" tire diameter Actual tire size may vary by manufacturer, but this is the industry standard.

There are multiple threads here on TDR with trucks having issues with the BFG AT. I was ready to run them in the 285/75/17 E when they first came out. That's when started doing my research here. Came across to many negatives. I would be curious to hear more about them now that they have been out a bit longer. I ran BFG AT on my 2nd gen 1/2 ton and they were great. I think that they are just too soft for these heavy trucks. My Toyo MT were great all around and I worked them hard. Like I said you will get lots of opinions and this is just mine.

Tradesman out of Vacaville CA. It does not fit perfect, originally built for a chevy/gmc. These things are expensive. It saved a chunk of coin and it fits well enough. Came back from very aggressive driving in Baja with flying colors. For a while I had all of my windsurfing kit and all of my tools back there. Long term goal is a custom flatbed and build my own composite shell.

I'm really curious why some of you think DW can't be tire related, I'm thinking you guys don't have much experience with it if that's the case

Try bringing your truck into a tire shop for a rebalance and rotation, only to hit the freeway and experience dw. I went out and bought the '08. 5 upgrade and had it aligned. Experienced it again and returned to the tire shop. The guy who "balanced" the tires was nowhere to be found. Two other tire guys redid them after checking the balance job the other guy had done the day before. They were an average of 4 ozs off! Nice, must have been the guy's last day. I should have just returned to the shop in the first place.

That was with Toyo At's,but with the balance all out of whack.

Marc@ XP Camper sure does a nice job if I win the lottery. Wander the West has some members with some flatbed mounted campers.
