I have successfully uploaded 5 pictures, I was trying for 6 but I assume 5 is the limit since I can not upload the 6th picture. This is my first post.

I started out upgrading my leaking gearbox to the latest factory one by Dodge for 700. 00. This forced me to upgrade to the latest tie rod setup which I bought the Bilstein dampner upon reading the posts. I also replaced the trackbar bushings with Luke Links bushings and sway bar links with BD Sway bar links. I also added a hydraulic filter oil filter to the system like another member post I found. After the Amsoil fluid was added to the system, I could not bleed the system out. The system also began to build an excessive amount of pressure in the reservoir. The p/s made more noise than the motor and the brake pedal pulsated. I removed the belt and discovered in and out movement when I moved the pulley. I found out the new upgraded pump was 1300. 00 like I have seen in some posts. I found a post from Jan. 2012 that had listed the part numbers for his pump upgrade. I was able to use those numbers and purchased the factory parts online for less than half. I also changed every p/s line on the truck. Truck steers great now.

Funny part was I not having any power steering pump issues until I worked on it. My hydraulic filter also required 5/8 hose on the return side instead of 1/2 hose like the post I found, not sure if the trucks were the same year.

I thought some people would enjoy seeing the difference in the pumps. I have seen some asking about but no pics.

I'm curious as to how stiff the steering effort is on your truck. I have upgraded to the new Mopar box, new Mopar pump, two new high pressure lines, a Napa rebuilt hydroboost (which actually reduced the steering effort a little) and I still think it requires too much effort. I can't help but think there still is a pressure or flow restriction somewhere. Or am I just crazy?

I purchased a Miller pressure/flow tester and the proper fittings on ebay to test this pump output. Maybe this weekend I will get to test it.

I wonder if I could just bypass the hydroboost and go from the pump to the gearbox to see if the hydroboost is stealing pressure/flow?

I saw how Mopar superceded the hydroboost to a new part which requires a new master cylinder also. Any of you Dodge techs out there care to chime in on if that superceded part was to provide more pressure/flow through the hydroboost to the gearbox?

Stock size tires, Carli BJ/trackbar, updated linkage.

Dealer is installing one of the upgrade power steering pump kits on my truck , as well as the new steering box, both under extended warranty.

PS Pump kit, according to the work order, is # 68102457AA, which I believe includes the pump, resorvoir, and bracket and pulley.

At least it BETTER include all that for $1295 full dealer retail...

The pump was actually 3 parts. 1). Kit-pump & pulley #68034326AB 2). Reservoir-power steering pump #68034303AB 3). Bracket-power steering pump #68100252AA also was a $50. 00 core charge.

The pulley must be pressed on the shaft of the pump, I used a Snap-On Tool for the job. It threads in the shaft of the pump and you turn the nut and bearing that is on the shaft left hand until the pulley is pressed on all the way.

The steering effort does not seem too stiff in my opinion because it turns easier for me now after the repairs I have made. I was not aware there has been an updated hydroboost unit and master cylinder for the truck.

Up grading to the new linkage is not something that has to be done to use the new box. The new box comes as a kit that includes a new tie rod end to allow use of the early style steering linkage. Of course most trucks that need a new box will probably benefit from the new style linkage

I am posting 2 pictures from the instructions to the gear box. Unless I am misunderstanding them it states for 2003-2004 to use the updated steering linkage. I had actually bought the linkage first then the box started leaking, so I waited until I could purchase new box.

Thank You Joe for article post. Darn shame I forgot to look at my back issues first, need to get in that habit.

What it says is to determine wich style linkage you have,by brand. If you have the old style use the enclosed tie rod end. That adds to the cost of the kit but makes it universal

Then what is the 2003-2004 MY vehicle configuration. At the top of the page on the left (picture I took of the instructions) it states **2003-2004 MY vehicles will require Cross-Car Linkages in order to complete installation-Failure to install Cross-Car linkage could lead to linkage damage.

In the part installation chart it states that 2005 thru 2008 with Haltenberger linkage (old style) uses the Big Steering gear, pitman arm, Haltenberger Inner Drag Link.
2003 thru 2004 uses Big Steering Gear, pitman arm, New Cross-Car Linkage 52122362AH (not included) Do NOT use Haltenberger Inner Drag Link provided.

I am just trying to understand the 2003-2004 MY vehicle configuration. That was why I stated I had to update my linkage in order to use the new box.

If anyone is holding off on making this enhancement due to price, I was able to save a few bucks by sourcing the components from Advantage Dodge in Farmington, NM for $571. 64. Ask for internet parts pricing.

68034326-AB $416. 40

68034303-AB $ 79. 08

68100252-AA $ 11. 16

Core charge $ 50. 00

Freight $ 15. 00

--------

$571. 64

Why is there a core charge on a new part?

I was wondering that as well. Pump is totally different, why in the world would they want it back???

Maybe they are lacking enough cores to meet the demand for reman old style pumps???

Mike.

I think the idea is the more cores they remove from circulation, the more likely the customer will have to purchase a new part from the manufacturer. I know, not a very good attitude.

A lot of OEM's do request cores for that very reason, but it seemed unusual to request a core on an upgraded part.

The really, really stupid move that OEM's make with cores is to only allow 1 year to return the core. Midland/Haldex only offers a 6 month window for core return.

So if I don't return a core within that time frame I lose the eligibility and they will not take the core back. When that happens to a dealer there are companys out there that do nothing but buy up cores to sell to 2nd and 3rd tier remanufacturers. That is how a lot of cores get loose into the aftermarket. Salvage yards also remove components to sell for cores.

With a lot of expensive slow moving parts in inventory a dealer has to really watch his cores. We run a 9 month report to snare any that are getting close.

Crazy...

Mike. :)

Troy,

Thanks for the pics and info. If you want to post more pics you can post the first one, then reply to your post and post more pics.

Question... . factory lines all fit up no problem?

I have everything ... . gearbox, pump, updated steering. I didn't get new lines. On the fence with that.

As far as cores are concerned... I wonder if this pump is used in the lighter duty trucks and other applications. That would explain why they need them.

Hi, my power steering pump has started leaking now. I would like to upgrade to the newer one but what I don't understand is why you have to replace all the steering linkage etc. . ?? Doesn't the pump just hook up to the old hose's or are they all different including the steering box itself?

I have the part numbers which I hope are correct can anyone chime in before I order these if they will work correctly?

68034326-AB - pump

68034303-AB - tank

68100252-AA - bracket
