As an owner and not a current buyer, this thread is good news. I bought the truck in my sig in early 09 with 32,000 miles and super clean for $27K. It remains unmodified except for the PSM air intake and extra fuel filter. It now has 90K miles. However, my future plans call for a Carli Pintop suspension and using it for a lot of overlanding around the western US.

Got my 07 for 26K, 100,000 miles, pretty clean. I only added Spyntecs. It did include heated leather, and really big speakers and amps under the seats. I think I got a good deal.

I wanted to get a 3rd gen until I found the truck I have in my sig. My pops truck has well over 300k and it's an 03 3500 6 spd 4wd. Original injectors, pump. Recently replaced factory clutch. That poor truck is abused more than anything I have ever seen, 30k mile oil change intervals on rotella if it gets that. I offered to buy it two yrs ago and wouldn't hear it now it's leaking oil terrible hate to see a nice truck fall apart but what do you do.

I find this all very interesting. Not at all what its like in my area. Have an'03 w/ 74k miles, all stock and as clean as they get and dealer wasn't even interested in trading.

I just traded my '03 in and KBB trade in value was $10k, dealer gave me $11,500. I could have held out and sold private but it needed tires and I just didn't feel like dealing with the hassles of private sale and tire kickers.

I encourage you to sell your diesels on your own as it really isn't that hard if done properly.

Some buyers are very serious, save sales tax in AZ at least on private sales, and save the stupid high dealer markups. Fleabay is the easiest as you can optionally keep the deposit if they decide not to buy. Test drive with a serious buyer maybe. The best part is you do get a higher price for your vehicle then the trade in. Bad tires - just list it as you get to select and run your favorite tires now...

Took me months to find a 5.9 and one dealer in town is running a scam bait and switch ad campaign for used 5.9 diesels. Advertized truck is never available rather hidden in a warehouse...

So I wound up with a 1 owner Craigslist advertized truck and it was cheaper then it's equivalent on fleabay. Better than 5-10K cheaper than the dealer prices and I got to meet the owner and ask about repairs etc.

Again Ebay is the simple way to sell your truck costing ~$125.00. Cragslist is free, but, more hassle with tire kickers and test drives. With the cost savings over a dealer lot there are many serious buyers out there some who ship it w/o as much as a test drive esp. if the price is reasonable or low.

I have been told my 09 looks nice but never had anyone approach me to see if it was for sale (lots of Fords and Chev in my area). I guess being a 3rd Gen 09 it is the least desireable of all the 3rd Gen trucks. I just turned 56k miles.

I see the Gen 3's high price around me as well. I bought mine from a old guy who was offered 6K on a trade in. I was offered 15 quickly after I bought it to replace my 96' stroke.

Sold my stroke for 9K with 300K on the ticker. Gas version was worth around 2K for same truck. The older diesel CC's are bringing top dollar, but compared to new they are a deal.

The 3rd gen trucks with the 5.9 is the desired versions and if equipped with a manual is even better. The 48re versions are less likely to fetch the most. So if you have an 05 5.9 CTD 4X4 with the NV5600 at or below 70K miles, it's worth lots of money, and you could be approached to sell it.

You just decribed my 05. Have never been approached about selling, though.

I'm curious why so many have low mileage trucks?

To me the whole idea of having a vehicle you like is the joy in driving it. Also, the whole idea of a diesel truck is towing power, fuel mileage and longevity. Seems to be a diesel truck that is left to sit alot seems like a big waste of money.

I'm not calling anyone specific out on this subject. I have a first cousin that bought a 2004 truck shortly after I got my 03. His sits 80% of the time and I'd imagine has less than 50k miles. His dad (my uncle) has an 03 that has just 70k miles on it. Mine had 158k miles on it when I traded it and I thought that was low mileage for it's vintage. Good friend of mine is close to 400k on his 12 valve '95 truck.

I had two, can't drive both at the same time, company pays for my daily driver, so my 07 sits. Check signature for both current trucks and the 04.5 I sold my brother.

Some people don't drive that much. Even better if they live close to work and don't have to drive so much. Having another car IMO is a waste unless it's a free company vehicle and even then it hadn't better be a coffin on wheels econobox. IMO low miles is flat irreverent as most 5.9's have stupid high miles on them and anything under or even close to and slightly over 100K on the clock is a rare gem. When I was looking for a 5.9 I could find any high priced truck I wanted with 200 - 500 K on it. Searching under 100K things get expensive/rare quick. Better said to hold their value. Only applies to 4x4, crew cab, and the rest be small 'options'. No CC or 4x4 and the value is way less, but still rare. 4X4 or Crew Cab = 10K price difference.

Being on both sides of the high/low mile coin: reasons do vary for owning a diesel truck. Hauling the only RV once a year or 100K put on in a year. Even DD as they don't make a station wagon anymore... I won't be caught dead in a 40MPG econo box because of an Elk encounter. :-laf Already been caught in a totaled 3/4 ton truck with a flattened elk as it is.

So you are really asking about the rare low mile trucks - made even rarer as people who paid a lot for them hang on to them. After all the 5.9 is irreplaceable as the new stuff has lower MPG, less reliability, plastic bumpers, and higher maintenance with emissions. Regardless this is the USA and everything is for sale for the right price.

All very valid points, thank you.

I guess had my 03 had not started to rust I would have been more inclined to keep it due to no emissions equipment. But knowing once rust starts, there's no stopping it. Cut out and replace and paint one area it'll return somewhere else and you'll be chasing it for years down the road.

Since trading mine I had two different people tell me the 03 trucks had rust issues, something to do with rust proofing which was changed for the 04 trucks. Don't know if there is any truth to that or not. Mine has been garage kept its whole life, but driven daily in all conditions.

Rust is a game changer and a good point. I take it from granted anymore that things rust off the frame in a few years...

It makes the stuff here cash and ship with no test drives... And another reason it is hard to find a local rust free truck is the demand from the rust belt. Never-mind the superstorms and total number of vehicles scrapped over that making older stuff rare. Cash for Clunkers also removed vehicles from use and eliminated parts.

Driving any of these TD trucks a short distance (ie Grocery getter) is hard on them, I live outside of town about 10 miles to fire up my truck and go in town it hasn't even come close to operating temp, then to shut it off do what you went to town to do, fire it up and go 10 miles back home shut it off. That IMO is REALLY hard on the truck, oil and not real good thinking if you want to keep things going for the 200K that I have on mine now and I plan on keeping it NO MATTER HOW LONG it takes to see a Million on it if Im still around to do it.

This is the reason for a Gas Taco and besides the Taco is 4x4 gas was cheaper (and still is) and its up to temp before I drive the 400 yard driveway to the main hwy to go into town. BTJMO
