How much have you guys paid to have new seals put in a vacuum pump. I had a place tell me about 5-6 hours and $90 for parts and now the bill is $850. :--) This seems a bit high on unless they charge over a $100 a hour.

Parts are about $24 and take about 2 hours of your own time if you have never done it before. I can do one in about an 45 minutes to an hour now. There is a TDR member that sells a rebuild kit, can't remember who at this time though ;)

My truck is to tall for my garage and the weather has been crappy so I thought I would just pay and be done. I was ok with maybe $500 but over $800 is B. S.

There are only 3 bolts that hold the assembly in place. Two on the vacuum pump flange to front gear box, one about mid-way back on the assembly to the block. You have the power steering lines to disconnect and 1 vacuum line and one oil supply line to the vacuum pump. The vacuum pump and the power steering come out as a unit to be split on the bench. To get out will take you about 25 minutes if you study it before you start. You will need an extension for the flang bolt that is between the pump and the block or inside one depending on how you refer to it.

Save your money, this is an easy fix. ;)

It is to late I aready had it done that is the problem. I just picked it up and looked at the bill they charged me 8 hours at $85 a hour plus another $100 for the seals. . It is a shame that I have to drive 3 hours one way to go to a shop I trust. I had been looking for a local shop to do some of the things that I don't feel like doing or have time for. With a town of 350,000 people you would think I could find one shop in town that is good but nope. I guess I will just start doing more of my own work or make the the long drive to J&H. Just had to vent.

TJ - I feel your pain. A good honest shop/Mechanic is more hard to find these days than a good Doctor. Sorry they took you to the cleaners.

Update: Well I got the truck back and it still leaks oil so I took it back to them and they said it was a oil line leaking. They said the part was $100 and they would put it in for no labor. So I went down there with 2 written est. 1 from a local shop at $350 and 1 from the dealer $550 to do the same job they did only it would be fixed. Needless to say I had to talk to the owner and argue with him for 30 minutes to which he finally took 2 hours of my bill which by the way is still $690. I did not let them try to fix the oil line as I did not want anything else to happen to my truck. So I paid $690 to a shop and still have a oil leak. Would you guys still report them to the Better Business Berura(spelling) and the dmv or just drop it and eat $700.

Just wondering if you knew for sure, as it makes the answer to your question way different. If you did not know it to leak, and this shop told you that, I would be in a real suspicious midnset. I would document everything, contact the BBB and your AG's office commerce dept, etc. .

While it is possible to have two leaks in the same area, It does seem a bit odd.
