Whats the lowdown on the vacuum pump? Mine's leaking a bunch of oil between the vacuum pump and the power steering pump. Can it be re built or resealed? Who has the best prices? Is it true they went to hydro boost in 97? Can I convert a 96 to hydro boost with ABS? And would I want to?? Thanks for any answers or opinions :)

Glad you posted this as mine is leaking too. I know there is a seal available to repair this leak but hopefully someone who knows will give us a part #. The 97 does have hydraulic brake booster but still has a vacum pump to run the heat /ac stuff.

If its similar to a 01 there is an o-ring which seals the power steering pump sleeve. The pump assembly is removed, the power steering pump unbolted, replace o-ring in the vacuum pump opening and reassemble. Also the vacuum pump themselves are non servicable and sold as complete units only.

I did this on my 98, it was an afternoon job to replace that seal by myself, though not difficult, a service manual is helpful, and I had to go to a specialty seal company, dodge does not sell that seal, they make you buy the pumps. Someone here will tell you the size and material needed.

I bought a vacuume pump on ebay for 200. 00 that was rebuilt by Cummins. I didn't need it, but thought it was cheap, I know a new one from dlr. is about 1000. 00, and was told a rebuilt one from Cummins is 750. 00.

If you ever have to replace the vacuum pump an electric one for a Ford is known to work just fine for under $100 and little bit of hose to relocate it to the firewall.

D/C shop cost on a 96 vacuum pump was something like $682 last fall. :{ I thought mine was gone so I looked into a new one. Nobody rebuilds that I could find and NAPA only had 98?-up pump - it didn't look like my 96 pump and oil line was rotated toward block too much for stock line to fit.

Thankfully it turned out to be a leaking vacuum line on the cruise diaphragm  so no new pump needed.

Dodge wouldn't even talk about a rebuilt unit - they only have new units and NO PARTS for rebuild available:mad:

Looks like you all solved your leak at least a few months back... so does anyone have the specs for the o-ring? Sounds like I have the same leak and if I have to pull vac. & p/s pumps off I'd like to have the parts for the attempted fix in hand. illflem listed the dimensions of the seal... but no detail on the o-ring. Anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Contact CPFF- either by pm on this board or e-mail him at -- email address removed -- - he can supply you with the correct seal & o-ring. He's the same guy who invented the KDP jig.

That seal started to leak a couple years ago on my '96'. My dealer said it was covered by the 100,000 mile warranty on the Cummins. They installed a new pump under warranty.

Worth checking out if you are still in the 100,000 mile engine warranty.

I recently replaced the seal on my vacuum pump and thought I had the leak fixed. For about a month I wasn't getting any drips from the vicinity of the vac. pump except from the breather tube. We just returned from a trip to South Carolina and on one of the fuel stops I noticed some oil on the ground and looked underneath to find the engine covered with oil on that side. We just got home last nite so I haven't had a chance to clean it up and see where the leak is.

I suspect it's the seal though. Others have also reported limited success with replacing the seal. So, now I will have to decide whether to replace the seal again or replace the vacuum pump. Cummins quoted me $605 for the pump. :(

Thanks all for the input... next stop the stealer to see if they want to put it on the 100k war-n-t... I'm a little under that at 92. 5k.

Cummins quoted $605 for the pump.

NAPA lists one for $444 w/ a 12-MONTH, 18k mi. warranty.

Seal & o-ring < $35... makes this the next choice if DC doesn't want to buy. It may take a couple/few weeks, but I'll post the outcome for anyone keeping score.
