Slow turning starter

Need help identifying (possibly) missing bolt on starter

I’d suggest buying what you want. If you don’t want to deal with the issues you have, you certainly don’t want to deal with an engine swap.

Say what you will about electronics and electronic controls, and I can’t BELIEVE that I’m saying this, but a 1st or 2nd Gen truck can’t hold a candle to the newer trucks BECAUSE of electronics and electronic controls.

Awfully presumptive of you to think I don't want or couldn't do an engine swap.

Perfect, for you, keep driving the new stuff. I'm over it after 6 long years

I’m guessing it’s not something you’re interested in, but have you looked into any custom tuning? 03’s are more limited, and it won’t fix your injectors, but there is something to be loved about a good tune on a CR.

I'd much prefer a p-pumped truck to a tuned computer

Sounds like a 2nd gen engine swap is in the future for this truck.

I wouldn't recommend putting a 12v in a 3rd Gen if your concern is electronic issues. There is a Youtuber Hot shot driver I watch occasionally; CP Steve Miller who put a 12v in a third gen after he burnt out his 04.5+ engine idling it over night extensively for a period of time. He makes it work but his day to day issues with his swap really lick the red of the lolipop.

Not sure where you live but inspections/vehicle registration may be a factor.

Your truck, your call. Though if you have an 03 Vin C HO engine, I'm interested in parts or the whole assembly. I wouldn't trade my 03 for anything. In my opinion the 03 04 HOs are peak in engine design for the pre-emission Cummins ISBs.

You've made up your mind so find a nice 12v if you can and sell the '03. There's a good market for it especially if it's an HO. If it's an HO it won't have a cat and on the drivers side of the head it'll state catalyst needed or not. Be prepared to put out a lot of money for a 12v in good shape with low miles.

the 06's are pre-exempt from emissions also

04.5+ trucks with the different piston bowl and injector tip design aren't the same as the early 03 04 HO's, there's alot of coverage on this topic already in the forums. Yes they're pre-emissions trucks but the different piston bowl design with matching injector tip was an emissions change in components, they also have additional pilot injection programing to meet emissions standards. 03 04 HO's are the "12v" of third gens being they have all the benefits of CRFI but weren't affected by the emissions compliance transitions of the era.

Obviously you can modify your truck how you want, but I can’t think of a single long term benefit to a mechanical fan clutch over an electronic one.

10 seconds is a very long crank time. 1-2 seconds is not long, 3-4 seconds feels like for ever, 5-6 an eternity… maybe time it.

Which Baldwin/cat filters? Neither company actually has a 2um filter that I’m aware of.

So having timed it several times it's 1.5 seconds from key turn to running. Also the mileage is now up to 15.0 not towing. Not good still but not as bad. It's up for sale and I have located a 2nd gen. so as soon as the 03 is gone ive got a truck
