Vehicle registration trick-Save $$$

Heard about this long ago but never tried it till today. If you have a vehicle over ten years old and resister it for three years in advance it's free after that for as long as you own the vehicle. The year tab they give you only says exempt, you will never get another registration notice. The lady at the DOL had never heard of it and was very surprised after checking into it. She said it applies to other states besides Montana as well.

If you have an older rig see if your state offers it, they definitely don't advertise it and may try to brush you off, be persistent.

Cost me $103 to register my old but good Toyota for life!

Only two years to go on my Dodges.

Bill... . if your local DMV said that can they tell from their screens what other states have this ?

some of us will have a hard time getting info out of Komiefornia and other such customer friendly states  OH did I tell ya I HATE THIS STATE

Yes! Ditto NJ.

We are famous for our rude customer un-friendly DMV workers.

I have a feeling it wont work here anyway.

If theres a buck to be made, NJ already figured out how to get it from the workin folk. :(

From Montana's web site

http://doj.state.mt.us/driving/vehicletitleregistration.asp

The owner of a light vehicle (passenger cars, pickup trucks one-ton and under, vans and sport utility vehicles) may choose one of the following renewal period options:

12-month registration, MCA 61-3-314 - The owner pays one year of the registration rate, county option tax, all other registration fees and any special plate fees.

24-month registration, MCA 61-3-560 - The owner pays the registration rate, county option tax, all other registration fees (except for the license fee for each 12-month period) and any special plate fees for the two-year period.

Permanent registration, MCA 61-3-562 - The owner of a light vehicle 11 years old or older may choose to permanently register the vehicle. This registration does not need to be renewed as long as ownership is unchanged. Fees collected at the time of permanent registration are:

$50 registration rate

$13. 75 or $18. 75 registration fee, determined by weight of the vehicle

$2 Highway Patrol Fund

five times the transportation fee, county option tax, special plate fees and, for light trucks, the gross vehicle weight (GVW) fees

I even checked the actual codes governing registration in Utah and Nevada, no luck:( I doubt any state with smog or safety inspection would do this.

Just checked the schedule of fees for PA and didnt come across anything. Ditto on the pissy attitude of the DMV people. Must be a pre-requisite for employment. I almost crapped when I got my first registration renewal. 153. 00 a year:eek:

She just told me her screen said that when transferring permanent registration from another state with a permanent registration schedule that all Montana fees should be collected plus $5 for a new plate.

PA way to save.

There is a way to get a permanent registration in PA. If you can establish that your vehicle is a "classic", the permanent registration is (or was in 1980) $50. 00. I don't know what the rules are now, but when I did it for my 1969 Camaro I submitted a photograph and description. Still had to be inspected annually. :)

My 03 cost me just under $500, when I bought it here in California, I hate to see what it will cost me next year. The best I can figure out from the newspaper, it will probably triple. I need to get the wife to retire, so we can move to our Idaho place.

While your looking for PA information, I have been trying for several years to find out "when towing a camper over 10K lbs, does the weight on the truck tags have to pay for the camper weight as well?

I have called PennDot, they told me to call a state trooper in Pittsburg. He told me to call PennDot. Nobody knows the answer for sure.

I have heard the following answers.

"when towing a camper, your truck tags have to cover the truck, and hitch weight". (which sounds correct, and the trailer tags for over 10K cost more then under 10K)

"under 10K lb camper, they don't care" (but I was asking about over 10K?)

Then one lady told me "your truck tags have to cover the combined weight of truck and camper".

Who knows? If Penndot don't know, how the hell can a cop fine you?

I even asked some friends who are local police. they said "we really don't care, but if you look unsafe, were going to pull you over". "When we have our traffic stops, were really not looking at RV's, were working over the guys towing utility trailer like landscapers". He went on to mention that 3 out of ever 4 landscape guys they pull over don't even have the lights/brake cable plugged in :(

Just an Update, after typing this post, I called PennDot again, this time they took my tag number, put me on hold for 5 minutes. when she came back on the phone she said "your truck is rated at 9000 lbs, so your truck can not safely tow 11,000 lbs. then started to explain how GCVW is only for Tractor Trailers. I think I should quit while I am still ahead, before I know it she will be sending Tractor Trailer tags to me :--

Re: PA way to save.

That’s another PA screw up. A car over 25 years old is an antique. You should be able to call your Camaro an "antique", but in PA's books, it says "if the car model is still in production, the car can not be an antique".

I remember my Brother trying to get antique tags for his Nova, but they were making this rice burner 4 cyl POS and calling it a Nova, so he could not get antique tags.
