You need to be logged in otherwise the system does not know who you are do lookup the last threads you read. The old system used cookies on the client side to maintain the date/time of the last visit. The new system keeps it in a database.
Either I didn't explain the problem properly or you misunderstood what I wrote.

When someone (even a non-member) goes to the discussion forum without logging on, there is a link that says 'View Today's Active Threads'.
I have always been able to click that link without logging on, and I got all the activity for the current day. Since the upgrade, it stopped working.
When I log on, the link changes to something like 'View recent posts' or something to that effect. That is the one that uses cookies to determine what I have not read yet. That seems to work ok.
This system doesn't work that way. You can view what's new since the last time you visited, which personally I think is better. It not the same software, only has a similar look.
