This is the link to the video. It's certainly not Todd at TCDiesel unless he changed his name to Shawn. Who ever the guy is, he likes to invent problems and solutions to imagined problems. I watched his video about the oil in the intercooler. He makes it sound horrible that the new engine has sooooooo much blow by. I wonder how much he really knows, if anything.

I am not sure, I repeat I am not sure but this guy in the video sounds a lot like another guy in a video that was talking about his high mileage ED. He had modified the crap out of it. Idled it lots of hours per day etc. If memory serves he deleted it also. I will try to find the video and see if its the same guy.

He also has never used the recommended oil and change intervals that all of the rest of us have done. I have had my 2014 Eco for a while, 21k and counting. I change Oil (Mobil 1 ESP) and Oil Filter, Fuel Filter every 7k. Clean my DEF injector same time and new Air filter every 10k. Overkill? maybe, but I have actually had a long talk with TC (Todd) at one time after my purchase, and have used every one of his recommendations for this engine. Removal of the HPFP shield, Sound Covers removed. Oil analysis done and watch FRP. I have not had one issue, other than FCA recalls and ECM flashes, etc. This Shawn guy has used Rotella and added additives not recommended since he has had the rig, Claims high Idle hours are ok (tool).
The VM 3.0L is NOT a Cummins is right.
I removed, just this weekend, my EGR diffuser tube and it was fairly clean at 20k. Intake also looked very good. I want to go with a tune to close that valve ASAP. An oil film always shows in my hot end intercooler pipe, but no sludge. Other than that, been a sweet truck. Bottom ends going were found to be cross threaded con rod bolts from factory. TC can confirm this. I agree with the Cooler issue and keep a close eye on that and HPFP sound changes as well as FRP numbers on my CTS2. As for the cam gear issue, I can count five I have read about. There are alot of this truck out there. Dont be put off by the percent of failures.

When y'all say "The VM 3.0L is NOT a Cummins" what specifically do you mean?
Background: I drive a toyota gas 1/2 ton now, and an ecodiesel by the numbers would be perfect for me.
Fears: I'd be better off with the unneeded heft of a 2500 because of quality, and CP3.
I would like to be able to keep some fuel around in gerry cans for emergencies, too.
My wife has a benz 350GL diesel, and that thing is awesome btw.

In the case of these Rams, they're built like the big rigs. The engines are not manufactured by the vehicle manufacturer. Kinda.
Since the inception, the Rams the TDR was originally focused on had, and still have inline 6 cylinder engines built by The Cummins engine company.
The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has a smaller V6 Diesel made by VM Motiri, which is not related to Cummins at all. This is proven by the absence of any Cummins badging in these 1500's.
They are completely different engines from totally different engineering disciplines.
I believe VM Motori is a division of FCA, who also owns Ram.

Regarding Heft, you'd be right. After that, not so much. The CP3 is no issue at all, and the quality thing is very debatable. Coming from Toyota, I understand your concerns but just engine wise, Cummins is par or better than Toyota. The remainder of the truck is equal weather 15 or 2500, and approaching Toyota, if you want to use their benchmark.
IMHO in recent times, Ram has gone up, and Toyota may have gone down a bit regarding quality.
Personally, I'd choose a 2500 over a 1500 any day putting aside curb weight and price tag.

My personal opinion about his credentials, he owns and ECodiesel and that's about where his credentials end.

I suppose it doesn’t matter much any longer as it appears he died last summer. That would explain why he has not posted anything for a while.

Shawn Took his own Life.....That's why we should all extend kindness whenever possible, His heart was in the right place , at times he just struggle with others.

The fact that the guy offed himself has nothing to do with the topic. I'm still waiting for more info on actual failures before I make any judgement on it. The aftermarket will almost always offer a solution to a common problem if the oem's don't cure a problem in normal production. So far, I've only seen the one shop in Utah that is "bulletproofing" Ecodiesels. They don't really even explain what they are doing with the exception of the oil cooler upgrade. Supposedly they are keying the cam gears to the cams somehow but I see no pictures or info on it.

I wouldn't be too concerned about cam gear slippage on a stock ecodiesel. One or two failures out of 150,000 isn't anything to worry about.
