Just came upon this thread. I have a 2005 A4, and have not had any problems, just rolled 10K. The oil is $$$, but after the 1st two oil changes, the interval is 10K. A few minor squeaks and rattles I will probably have the dealer look at some time, but overall it seems to be a good little car. 47 MPG on the highway with the auto.

There are several sources for the oil now, I am using ELF, bought a case online. I am using MANN filters. I think it may have changed now, BUT Fram filters at Wal*Mart were just a reboxed MANN filter for about twice what you can buy the MANN's for, but in a jam it would get you going, if you couldn't otherwise source a MANN. I heard that this had changed, but last time I opened a box at Wal*Mart it was a MANN.

I did both my 5K and 10K changes by dropping the plastic covers and draining out the bottom, what a PITA, there are something like 15 torx screws to do this. I have an oil sucker, may do them from the top in the future.

you can get your filter about everywhere mine is a little harder had my local carquest call his WIX rep at the factory and they said it would be another year before they could get the right to manifacture or sell under the WIX name

By the way to keep my rant going the Wife had some time so she took the Jetta back to the dealer cause it ran bad and radio keeps meesing up-on cold mornings it won't turn on. SO they replaced the glow plug wiring harness said that it ran bad cause the fuel heater powes off of the glow plug W/H. Also decided it was time to go ahead and change the Radio so we got the best Wolfsberg edition radio cause they were out of the base model ones. So far so good car runs better and radio works good sept its amplified and distorts the speakers a little. One more problem and they have to buy the car back, Whats next?

WOW - this is pretty cool - here I thought I was the only Cummins guy who would appreciate the VW TDi. . ! I picked up a 2003 Jetta Wagon in January & can't say enough about it. . I love driving it everywhere. . 41 mpg city or hwy (85-90 mph) :p . .

We were in Germany and Austria last fall & I went nuts over all the little diesels cruising around out there. . Had to have one, and here I am. . !!

Now, as for the comparison with a Dodge Cummins - In short - the only fault is the fact that I can't haul big sheot like I used to - other than that, the Jetta TDi Wagon wins as a commuter & fun to drive car. (I sold my 1998. 5 24v 3500 & bought the Jetta) Not to worry - I am in the process of repowering my 1989 Chevy 3500 CC 2wd with a 12 valver. . I will have my 6BT fix soon!!! Oo.

My soon to be wife put a deposit on a '99. 5 (A4 - new body style) Jetta TDI on Sunday. We're picking it up tomorrow and I have had parts for it on order starting yesterday.

When we went to see it on Sunday - we hadn't even made it to the seller's house yet and I was asking her how much horsepower she wants at the wheels. :-laf

You'll love it. . uhhh. . I mean - she'll love it...

There's quite a few TDi'ers up your way. . Check out tdiclub.com. . (you've probably spent a LOT of time there by now, but just thought I'd put it out there. . )

Just installed my dieselgeek Panzer plate. . Kinda wish I spent the loot on some injector tips from KermaTDi, but it just freaked me out to see the oil pan that close to the ground with only a plastic belly pan protecting it!!

Lil' off topic, but, when is the magic date again?

Well I'm becomming a little less enthralled with ours. The cel light is still on and then there was the waterpump failure, butluckily we saved the engine.

The latest from the weekend is what we think is the A/C compressor clutch that is crapping.

That's not a good track record with only 91 K on the clock on a 99. 5.

We've had several other VWs that were good quality... . this one isn't.

Special Oil Explained..........

Fred Voglmaier has some useful info and a chat board for TDIs:

The factory training manual states a 45 cetane minimal rating.

Volkswagen's oil specification for its diesel engines is called VW 505. 00. Very few motor oils in North

America carry the VW 505. 00 rating. Volkswagen calls for API CD rated oil for the North American

market. The problem is that API CD is so out of date that the API forbids the CD rating from being used.

Volkswagen has not been quick to upgrade its oil specification because of a new rating system being

developed by ACEA in Europe. Volkswagen has now upgraded its oil for diesel engines and aligned it to

the new European specs. The old VW 505. 00 specification never had a direct crossover to any API oil

ratings. With Volkswagen's new upgraded diesel oil specification with a direct ACEA rating, there will now

be a direct crossover to an API oil rating. It will be at least a year before the new ACEA B4-98 will have an

API equivalent, probably API CH-4. The following article can be found at www.lubrizol.com in the June

Newsline. ACEA Issues New Engine Oil Specifications Test protocols include new and updated tests.

ACEA has issued upgrades to its specifications for gasoline and diesel passenger car engine oils, and

heavy-duty diesel engine oils. First allowable use of the sequences was March 1, 1998. By March 1, 1999,

all new claims to meet ACEA sequences must conform to the 1998 issue. Claims against ACEA 96

sequences will not be permitted after March 1, 2000. The specifications include both increased test

severity and updated technical requirements with no intent to increase severity. An example of this latter

change is the replacement of the OM 364A engine test with the OM 364LA. This engine, which is the int

rcooled/low emissions version of the OM 364 engine, is used to evaluate bore polish and piston deposits.

For passenger car diesel engine oils, the following changes were made: •B1-98 — Additional parameters

were added to the OM 602A test, and the M111E fuel-economy test was added. •B2-98 and B3-98 —

Additional parameters were added to the OM 602A test. •B4-98 — This is a new category for oils used in

direct injection diesel engines requiring special quality oils. The category includes a new engine test, the

VW TDI. This four-cylinder , 1. 9 liter direct-injection diesel engine is turbocharged and intercooled.

If you call VW Customer assistance, they will advise you to use a CG-4 rated oil. I'm currently using Mobil Delvac 1300,

and plan on switching to Delvac 1 at 15K.

This is the 2nd TDI I've had the pleasure of owning (or owning 1/2 of in this case... haha).

I put close to 50k miles in less than two years on my old TDI and never had to do much of anything to it outside of normal maintenance.

This one is very well broken in since it is a '00 with 271+k on the clock. Runs like a champ and has had a new VNT-15 turbo (300mi on it now), water pump, timing belt, serp. belt in the last 5k miles. This one is a stripper - no power options at all, but it does have cruise, A/C, etc.

I'm familiar with the TDIClub. For the most part, it is a good source of info... however, the majority of their members are myopic and wouldn't even think about doing something to their car that isn't in a VW service manual.

I have owened and tuned the 1. 6, 1. 9 early models my opinion is it is a stout engine but it had-has? head gasket probs. Iron block with aluminum head= head gasket freeting, sometimes the precombustion chambers will work loose in the head

M Glaser . . the head gasket issues are gone with the TDI'S. . in fact you can use the canadain metal MLS headgasket for the 1. 9 L and not blow them for a older IDI . . a set of head studs will work really well too. . The IDI engines were easier to blow a head gasket . . The TDI headgasskets are VERY stout. .

I agree with Deo 100%.

My wife's '01 Jetta TDI has over 275k on the clock and it doesn't exhibit any head gasket problems or other abnormal signs of wear.

My favorite car so far was an 02 golf TDI GLS 5spd. Great car. Sold it. Shoulda kept it. We have an 04 Jetta GL auto. I like the pre-Pump-deusse motors better, and the 5spd way over the auto.

BTW In europe they have "4Motion" aka AWD + TDI Golf's, Passats, etc. Hopefully we'll see that in 2010 or something.

still have not modded my 05. 5 tdi any. Any one have any recomendations

I'd mess with the fuel temp sensor if I had a Pump Deuse engine. That really wakes 'em up for cheap money. It can be done for a few bucks if you are a DIY dude or with a commercially available 'box'. This is known as the 'Evry mod' with the VP-37 "ALH" engines and that term seems to have carried forward with the PD engines/cars...

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dgace/evry_mod.htm

I ran the Evry mod on the '98 Beetle I (should have never) sold back in '04 and I have a 670 ohm resistor wired up with a switch on the '98 Beetle I bought back in August - works really well - but she stumbles like a sonofagun at idle and slowing down to a stop (this is a well known issue... ) since this resistance value is too low.

Found a '97 Jetta with 280K miles, windows don't work, A/C don't work, guy says it runs and starts good. I can get it for $1100-$1200.

What do you think?
