Here is a CTD for you

motor mount id part number help?

thanks for all the info from everyone. They sound like alot of fun to bomb and are still reliable for daily driving. I'm not sure if i'm gonna purchase one or not, but i need to do something, diesel is $3. 35 here and rising. If i end up buying a tdi, i'll probably be asking more questions. thanks again,

Lance

98Slushbox: Test drive a VW TDI then make your decision. Once you drive one, you'll be amazed at the similicity and the torqur curve.

Wife's TDI almost bit the big one today... headed west on I 90 in NY state... in cruise at 80... . engine overtemp light/buzzer starts going off..... gage is pegged at 260.

Fan was broken from the hub??

Was able to nurse it back home (2 1/2 hours) and pulled the fan out... seems the motor froze up and somehow melted off the hub. WTF????

Oh well... . Don't think we fried anything and it should live.

Hi hazw8st,

Your ride sounds good. Man you have alot of goodies on her. :)

TDIers don't need to buy pricey kits to have a good reliable system.

The vnt15 gets a bad rap because of failures once pushed beyond it's capabilities. Any turbo will do that when they are being spun up too fast. I ran the stock vnt to over 175hp with no problems but I did things alittle different then everyone else. The trick to make them survive is to slow down the bottom end spoolup. You don't have to sacrafice much bottom end to do this and the bonus is the clutch holds in at this power level too.

I noticed how the turbo would come on real strong on the bottom end and then fall on its face, then pull hard again just to fall on its face again. You can see this on the dyno graph clearly. Makes for added stress to the turbo under full load. I throw boost at the vacuum line at the turbo's actuacter which smooths things out and makes for a steady hard pull.

I have installed one of our PDR vnt 17's now which is a direct drop in and she pulls even harder now and droped the egt's by almost 100deg's with a max of 1250 under full throttle in high gear. :D

Nascar: Cool... . I have used modded VNT15's, hybrid VNT15/17's, GT20's, and GT22R's. Although I put down more horsepower with a GT22R ball bearing turbo, the powerband is sporatic and unpredictable at best. I'm happy with a highly modded GT20 turbo. Nice driveablility... and no hassles. I cannot be any happier. I am happy to say that I cannot modify this drivetrain any more.

My next mod would be to remove this drivetrain and replace it with the drivetrain of an Volvo 850TD, of course, with a manual transmission though.

Note: The 850TD drivetrain is a VW inspired Volvo turbodiesel that shares patents with Volkswagen. The 850TD turbodiesel is also considered a "TDI".....

the volvo 850 has a VW 2. 5L TDI Engine... same as the transporter. . just like the olfd 760 volvos had a vw 2. 2 l 6 cyl turbo and non turbo 6cyl vw idid diesel. . some even had the 5cyl td...

do the new 05. 5 PD motors need the vent kit to avoid the intake clogging ?

any thing else I should know about?

not sure wherther to van aiken chip or go with the diesel tuner chip that PDR now sells

Rivercat: The new PD "Pumpe Duse" design is a tremendous leap forward compared side to side to the 1996 VW turbodiesel engine. I for one have not owned a Pumpe Duse, when you browse different forums, the only people that are "in the know" on PD technology are the real VW TDI gurus. PD performance is not as advanced in North America as it is in Europe, where the PD design was first introduced in late 1999. Here are some links that will send you in the right direction... good luck!

I think the '07's will finally be common rail, might want to bypass the PD type.

I have a '02 5sp Golf, 112k running disconnected EGR, -1 VNT, and ARP head studs. I have a bypass oil filter kit and a 2 micron CAT fuel filter setup somewhere but not installed. Regular mileage is 42 hammering it with 4k rpm shifts, so I guess it will maintain 46-48 with 2k rpm shiftpoints and light accelerator input. I had . 205's but took them off when diesel approached the $2. 50 mark. I wish that the A4's didn't complicate the diesel injection system but as long as everything works it's nice. I want to do some high performance stuff to it but each time I counter it by thinking it's a commuter and needs to be a reliable source of transportation... Maybe i'll just chip it and have a happy medium. I prefer the simple 8 valve to something more complicated, like a friends 1. 8T that just ate some valves...

Im having radio probs with my 05. 5 seems like there are lots of bugs that come with that half year any potential buyers stick with the 06 and up!

Also the turbo, not sure what model that came on the 05. 5 is junk and the ecm/fuel map.

they are talking now that due to the radio causeing severe problems in the wiring harness that they have totaled some 05. 5 cars and gave the customers 06s for no aditional charge with the 6speed.

I will post later about my situation once it pans out

Sc0: PD's are common rail. The PD's bottom and top ends are alot stronger than the VW TDI ALH-VE engines. The PD's can handle more boost, make more horsepower and do it consistantly.

PD's are not common rail. They have unit injectors that are driven off the same camshaft that runs all 8 (or 16 in Europe... ) of the valves in the cylinder head.

just got the car back from dealer they tore the whole dash apart and found a loose ground (they said) the wifey buged them about how blue/gray the smoke is almost like a 12v with a bad or out of time pump. And they supposidly reflashed the ecu. Any one know whether a box that I would buy for this car 05. 5 would also work on the newer 06 cars I heard they made changes to the 06 that gave them extra tourque. just don't want a half year only chip thats hard to sell if I don't like it or better yet if the car has really bad probs and they put us In a 06 for free don't want a chip that wont fit it.

I bought a 99 A4 jetta a few months ago. These cars are great! I'm getting ready to do the timing belt this week, then maybe start bombing! :D I'm so impressed with these little farts, I'm thinking about swapping one into my 65 Stang.

Slince. go to fred's TDI club and do a search on champane performance on a beer budget. There is a mod where you put a resister between 2 wire going to the pump, makes a good seat of pants difference for 12cents! I know it worked on my 98, but the 99 is a different motor.

I have owned vw diesel powered cars for over 20 years and my wife drives a 98 TDI beetle, I use Rotella 15/40 std oil and change it every 5k miles and her car has over 160k miles on it with no problems other than me having to clean out the carbon inside the intake and changing the Timing belt every 70 k miles otherwise its been a good car! I wish vw had taken some of the older rabbit design engine parts and other cheaper parts and used them along with the TDI Turbo design to make a simple engine to work on. she gets around 50 mpg and its a manual trans car.

tdi performance

With a 98 and up TDI, what kind of performance would you expect to see with basic bolt on upgrades(boxes, injectors, turbos)? Performance being HP, TQ and quarter mile times.
