Started having problems starting after changing fuel filter around 250,000 miles... Changed lift pump... . Didn't make any difference... Would have to tow it to get it going... Then it started cutting out at high rpm (275,000 Miles) as if the fuel filter was plugged..... Then finally it would start OK in morning, but not after it was warmed up..... Fiound that if we poured cold water on pump, it would start... ... ... !!!!!!!! I posted a thread on here in march/02 ... ... .....

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=36669&highlight=high+rpm

. . trying to find the problem (300,000 Miles)..... I even had it to cummins in Toronto Ontario and they thought it may be the VP-44, but couldn't say it would fix it... ... I finally got a new VP-44 and put it on... ... ... It works great. . !!!!!!!!! (357,000 Miles) (575,000 KM)..... Truck is not bombed... ... ... .

Pit Bull- I agree with you that 80+ people responding to the poll is pretty weak, but I think we've heard that even non-members who view the thread get counted in the total hits, kinda skewing the number. Still pretty low, I'll give you that.

I guess we'll have to wait a couple of years to see if a mass of VP44 failures occurs to see if we can tie premature failures to prior LP failures. Since I as well as some others believe this is a long-term affect of LP failures we may not know for some time.

Tell ya what, if I got 250k out of the VP44 as preuber did I wouldn't be happy about having to shell out the $1400. 00 but I could LIVE with that!

Curious...

I guess the only thing that can be said on these polls is "Get used to disappointment. " Anyway, are not visitors as well as members counted as views and only members can vote? That might account for some of the difference.

As far as failed VP-44's goes, it would be interesting to know if anyone that has posted a failure, regularly used a fuel additive? Either with a lubricity additive or not.

RADdodge, I'm beginning to think that these trucks are like people. Some just live longer than others, no matter how they are treated.

RADdodge has a good point on the fuel lube. How many faile that used something? No particular brand. When starting out on a long trip I add a small bottle of PS to the factory tank, and a large one to the 95 gal bed tank. This is 3X normal. Plus I never run my tank less than 1/2. Also, I carry a small bottle of PS for emergency filter change. A sealed bottle is clean and just pour the left over into the tank.

This might appear to be a waste; however, once I had to change the filter in a rest area and almost did not get it going. So it is cheap insurance.

This poll is a waste of time, I'm not even believing the stock failure numbers. If someone had a VP44 failure on a stock engine they would not just post to the poll and then not post, giving additional information. I guess we need to go with the old saying that you can't believe anything you hear and only half what you see.

Injector Pump died at about 65k, at the time I was running with the original PM and Dr. Performance Phase 2 injectors. Changed lift pump at 127K.

Stock except for a VA CPC box. Stock VP44 & lift pump with ~45k miles. I'm going to check the lift pump pressures this weekend to see how it's doing.....

Some of those who are viewing this but not voting or posting are like me, pump is working great, truck has 2118 miles on it, doesn't help much. But I still want to see the results. JTMcC.

Mine died at 45,000 just after bombing, but the poll woln't let me vote! I have tried several times, maby others are having this problem too?

18000 miles - dead

Mileage - 18000

Bombed - no (at that time)

Lift pump - unknown as I had no fuel pressure guage then

Summary - Injector pump died without warning except for sporatic

white smoke on startup and low power for a few miles when cold.

Weird huh? But it happened. Stealer replaced injector pump under warranty but my Pherd buddies had a good laugh!

Does anyone else think it is weird that over 1300 have viewed this poll and only 160 have voted? If the VP44 is such a big problem you would think more members would want this data? Maybe the VP44 problem is like the West Nile virus, it only kills a few with weakened immune systems, but it makes a great news story so it get a lot of press :-laf :-laf

Mine is fine @66,000 mlies, and thats how I voted. However I good freind of mine, who is a member here (just doesn't post much, so I'll pick up his slack:rolleyes: ) had one die @21,000 miles bone stock, and the 2nd one die @ 64,000 miles BOMBED similar to mine. So far the 3rd one is fine, but it's only been about 5,000 mlies since it's replacment, BTW it's a '98. 5 3500 QC 4x4 5-speed. Both of his pumps died without warning, and no symptoms, first on the interstate, and the 2nd just pullin' in his driveway.

Lost two. One bone stock at 26k. The other SMs and Drag comp. Bad fuel pressure. One died over about 12 miles. other one died on the interstate. Started about 10 more times but wouldnt drive. Cummins diagnosed it as a bad battery connection because it would start. Then they hooked up the magic box after it died on em and they said shes caput. Neither failure was catastrophic like I expected.

You know, it seems that a lot of people that have a VP-44 go south on them, usually have it happen again. How many people out there only replace their pump once? Could this show that it might be something in particular with the truck rather than the pump? Or could they just have some rotten luck with their revision of pump?
