I should have submitted this as a poll. Maybe someone can do that for me. But here is the premise.

Does running a fueling/timing box on ALL OF THE TIME shorten the life cycle of the VP? Reason I ask is that... ... ... . friend of mine lost VP44, replaced with new VP44 and and now after 10K later has driveability issues once again and P0253 code. His first VP44 coded the dreaded P0216. He historically runs on 3x3 all of the time. Do you all think that he is stressing the VP44 to much in terms of duty cycles? His LP pressure, BTW is good.

It's the heat!

Until somebody can prove to me that fuel temperature has 0 impact on VP44 operation and life, I am gonna keep bangin' this drum. The only time my 0216 code crops up is when the temps are at 90* or above, or I am driving for more than 1 1/2 hours.

I would be curious to hear of any other daily drivers that have the comp and the LP relocated AWAY from the engine block that still have VP44 failures. Persons living in the desert during the summer need not respond.

Sticks....

My first 0216 code was in April, and my pump was replaced July 7th in Oregon climate, and doubt there was one 90 degree day in that time frame. Our 90 degree weather comes usually in August and Sept. , and not much of that.

My LP is in stock location. By the time I replaced the VP, I had thrown the 0216 code hundreds of times. BUT, I had driveability issues along with this... . no throttle response while cruising, and from a dead stop (episodes were random)

Are you saying you trip the 0216 and you don't have any driveability symptoms??

sorry to hear it Joe, get rid of the pump tap and get a set of Don M's Mach 3. 4's

I have em with the comp in ez mode and its :D

If you've got a FSM, read up on the fuel return (overflow) valve. If it doesn't open and let fuel back to the tank, it won't matter how much LP pressure or flow you've got, the fuel won't cool the VP44 like it's supposed to. Stagnent fuel will get warm and may be the reason for your 0216.

In my case the answer is no.

My VP44 died just this past week on my 99 2500. A few weeks ago it started to get hard to start when warm.

I have 213,000 miles on it and have been through 3 lift pumps.

The engine has been bombed ever since the 20,000 mile mark.

I guess I was lucky.

Bob....

I'm starting to give that some thought. Gonna take Rogers truck for a spin to see what the fuss is all about.

Give me a shot at the sale ;) joe they work great and put less stress on the pump.

since the injectors went in the box is off and the hp is up :) and I was running DD3's

And I still love the DD3's for towing :)

Bob, your post is confusing to me. Does it mean that you have or have not towed with the EDM's if you have was/is there a temp difference? One other thing, are you selling EDM's yourself?

Roger

Roger, my plan is to run the EDM's out of towing season and run the Mach EDM's for fun.

Towing time the DD3's really rock n roll

The 3. 4's would be too much for towing

Roger, I am authorized to sell Don's injectors :)

Question

Bob, did I understand your post correctly; at one time you were running just the DD3's and a boost modual. I want to go with just injectors (DD3's) and a boost modual, 4 in. exhaust, stock turbo (hx35) and not be worried with EGT problems. If I have temp. problems, maybe drop back to DD2's. I know this has been discussed before, but I've read so many post's, don't know which way to go. Shoot me a PM. Thanks!

I have 8K on a DDUFM and a 253 code. I understand there is a sensor in the pump that detects timing and can come loose. I also understand it could be the box. I am still checking all leads before condemning the 44. I usually run the box on 3 sub 4.

Bob,

What kind of EGT's do you get with Mach 3's? How is the mileage? What is difference in HP between DD3's and Mach 3's.

Thanks,

Charles

Thanks for the condolences. I was unaware that 99's had weak pumps. After I hooked up the box to the pump and it still ran I was under the illusion I had a decent 44. Although I did cook the auto in a week. :(

Charles, I need to hit the dyno with the DD3's and Mach 3's. I asked Don for an injector with 50 more HP than the DD3's

I think he nailed it but need to dyno to prove it.

Still on the first tank of diesel :( and need to take in account the switch to winter fuel so mpg's numbers may be hard to determine but I always check mpg's by hand every tank.

I've never had an issue with egts the mach do produce more heat but the hp and torque are up across the board.

egts are not a concern, I really like these injectors without a box.

Bob,

Thanks for the info. That might be the route I'll take. Not sure if I want to pierce the VP44 when I get the new one. My old is still working, but I figure it will crater in the next year.
