Are we done yet ???

For those of you who are not satisfied you might try this. Take the rules that Mark posted and try to write out the exact implementation of those rules. Exactly what words are you going to allow. Exactly how do you define obscene. The courts have been wresting with this for a long time. I don't see us ever settling it here to Everyones satisfaction.

[ON THE SOAPBOX]
Dennis, I believe it's a foregone conclusion that you'll never please all of the people all of the time, neither will you please all of the people for some of the time or even some of the people for all of the time. The best you can really ever hope for, is to please most of the people for most of the time.

As you well know, I have been on the receiving end of TDR censorship and on those few occasions, when my vocabulary has been considered borderline within the strictest interpretation of your remit as Other Forum Moderator, I have taken it with good grace and apologised to you and your predecessor, if I had inadvertentally offended anyone.

I believe there is significant merit in briefly mentioning that for this entire thread and in any other thread you could name from a history search on the TDR, you would be hard pressed to find even a handful of individuals who have expressed their individual right to free speech and publically stated their support for the current stance - unless they too had been censored - whereas the "background noise" from the rest of the discerning  TDR membership has been, by contrast, deafening..... (BTW, just a hint of humour, not misplaced sarcasm!)

Of course, it has been categorically stated in this forum on previous occasions, that complaints have been received by the TDR moderators  regarding certain "content" and this has been a significant factor in determining where the current line has been drawn.

The TDR is obviously NOT a democracy and reiterating the message from the first paragraph of this post above should be a significant consideration. As Other Forum Moderator, you have the mandate of deciding what is/is not acceptable. We're all for the most part pretty reasonable and would it not be worth just a short poll to gauge the "real" feeling on the street, so to speak?

I sincerely believe that a reassessment of the current guidelines would be a genuine step towards a compromise situation. You must of course retain your power of veto, but if you don't bend a little, your tenure as TDR Other Forum moderator may not be as rewarding as you originally believed and I do not want this to be the case.

[paragraph edit]

FWIW, I would like to suggest that one of the major pre-requsites for being a TDR Moderator is that you should at the very least be able to receive and respond to PM messages from the TDR membership. Within the last six months, when I tried to find out what happened to a post in this forum concerning a previous censorship issue, my request had to be processed through a 3rd party (TDR Admin) as the serving, Other Forum Moderator had at the time, elected not to be contacted by either email or PM. I note that this is not now the case and the Other Forum Moderator can be now reached directly through email and PM.

[/paragraph edit].

In summary, responsibility and accountability go hand-in-hand. and a little flexibility goes a long, long way..... Check this OTHER thread out too.....

Not freedom. Liberty.

Might I point out something else? We are not free to post here because there are rules prescribing and proscribing written behavior; besides, we sort-of pay for this forum and agree to abide by the rules.

It might be more accurate to say that we are 'at liberty' to post here. There *is* a difference betwixt freedom and liberty.

True freedom involves no rules whatever. Liberty involves a base of rules to ensure at least a modicum of civility in interactions. Thus, freedom is limited to as small a degree as possible in order to maximize our ability to go about our business without being unduly restrained or affected by others going about theirs.

As to the blonde joke, the end could have been cleaned up immensely, by simply stating, "She turned away to put her things back in her purse. When she turned back, she glanced down then said to the cop, "Oh, no. Another breathalyzer test?" This way, those who don't know or don't think that way, won't see what's funny and will move right along. Those of us with perverted minds will immediately know what wasn't said and will at least chuckle.

Basically, y'all have to learn how to write the unwriteable without actually writing it.
