If one buys that argument, then one should exclusively use Mopar branded DEF. I'm not sure dealing with either Peak or WM would lead to any kind of satisfactory resolution. That's why I always use my DEF tester before dumping the DEF into my truck.

Not that you could prove anything or say you tested the last batch you put in the tank, but at least you know that you are putting in DEF that is within spec.

With my episode this past weekend, other then running the code to see what it was, which was bad DEF, he tested it, and it was good. I had added 2.5 gallons of Peak, which I always do at 1/2 tank. This was the day before we left for the trip.

So I get the warning with apparently nothing wrong, and good DEF in the tank, go figure. Don't know what would have happened if it tested bad, I guess drop the tank or what. He did clean the DEF injector. He did say it had a little build up ,but nothing to cause any issues, this is at nearly 25K. He did say he's seen them so plugged up they wouldn't spray.

Looks like I will be buying a tester, at least I'll know I'm putting in good DEF. Unless you know how to read the date codes on the Peak DEF, what is there for you to know how old it is :confused: The Walmart I buy it at has a sticker on it with a date which I assume is that particular stores sticker when received. That date was 10/06/16 ,so hopefully it hasn't been sitting somewhere in distribution center for several months or longer.

At this point after my episode I am going to get a tester, and find out how to read the manufacturing date on the box. They can blame someone ,but it won't be me hopefully.

For those that use Peak Blue DEF. reading the date code on the box or jug. The same number is on both. Here goes :

My last box of DEF had this number code 12171161937

12 is where made

17 is the year plus one, so its 2016

116 is the days remaining in the year, so this batch was made Sept 6

1937 is the actual batch code

In my case this last box of Peak Blue DEF I bought from Walmart was made Sept 6, 2016 . I bought it Oct 19,2016. It was nearly 6 weeks old. Probably can't get it anymore fresh then that. I thought the Walmart sicker had a 10/06/16 date it was actually 10/15/16. I'm thinking it was in that store 4 days before I bought it

On edit, from now on I'm going to either cutout part of the box with the date code or out of the jug or both, so I can prove at least how old the DEF is.

Also getting a Refractometer to test before using. This may seem like an overkill to those that come on here ,and say NEVER had a problem with the DEF system in XXXXX amount of miles. This is a very problematic system that can happen to anyone, and does quite often. IMO its a bad system that needs improvement.

When talking to Peak today they also suggested testing before use.

Went to peak site didn't find an explanation on translating date code to confirm your explanation. I would have read this as a julian date so the 171 would have would have been the 171st day of the year & the year 16 is there . We Julian
where I work . I'm not saying that your wrong just that their system is confusing :confused:

Hell don't take my word for it, if you don't believe what I was told . Heres the number to call 1-800-323-5440 ,and ask for technical support. give them the number that was on my last box I bought I will repeat for you 12171161937. If you think you can decipher it on your own have had it, but when explained to me on the phone it made sense to me, well at least their method. I'm sure not smart enough to make anything out of that number without explanation. Good luck.

If you don't tow alot and def sits in your tank for a while, the injectors might clog.

I add one of these every 4 to 6 months to prevent clogging

Here it is straight from the horses mouth. The email I got from Peak on how to decipher the date code:

"Here is an example code that deciphers the batch code for diesel exhaust fluid.

[TABLE="width: 500, align: center"]

Example Code
Method to Decipher

11162381472

11 = LOCATION
16 = Year + 1 (2015)
238 = Days remaining in year (Reverse Julian Date) May 7th
(365-238 = the day it was produced)
1472 = Batch Code

[/TABLE]

The first two letters or numbers can change depending on blend facility, but the codes all translate the same based off of ISO standards. You mainly want to be concerned with the 3rd through 7th digits. The third and fourth digits indicate the year it was produced plus one. The 5th through 7th. digits indicate the days left in the year that it was produced.[FONT=wf_segoe-ui_normal][/FONT][FONT=wf_segoe-ui_normal]Thank You,

Aren't you concerned that adding additional water to the tank will dilute the mixture and drop it below the 32.5% Urea concentration ?

According to Bob4x4, weak DEF will not hurt your def system. I use reagent grade DI because it is likely as clean or cleaner than the DI used in the DEF. I haven't had a problem yet. If the system detects weak def, it is supposed to trigger more DEF spray. Warmer climates call for occasional DI to be added (my opinion). Cooler climates don't need DI added.

Year 2016+1= 2015?? OR, Year 2016+1= 2017 OR is it, Year 2016-1=2015

Dealer had no idea why I got the CEL ,and the Check DEF system see dealer. It was counting down the miles ,then decided everything was okay, and quit counting the miles.

I tow a fair amount, when this happened I was towing a 13K plus fifth wheel. Dealer did say that it sometimes triggers the CEL after a few miles after filling, and it did around 80-100 miles the code was bad DEF , but it wasn't they checked it.

Maybe a hiccup in the DEF sensor?

It appears some of you are making this harder then it has to be, I pretty much explained it so ANYONE should understand . Here it is again for you.

The year for whatever reason they add one so in MY case that number is 17 ,making the manufacturing year 2016, when they start manufacturing in 2017 you going to see an 18 on the third ,and fourth digit in the date code. Digits 5-7 are the days left in the year or the date that is was manufactured. Pretty simple ONCE you know how to read it.

Yup, same horses mouth I talked to with the same thing I posted earlier in this thread:rolleyes:

Date code on the box I just picked up says.........CP17204 6 4661
So is it 6/10/16?

If you go by the first five numbers then yes it would 6/10/16. I guess they use numbers or letters on the first two digits to identify where its made. The next five digits is the date.

Guess that would be me ,sorry . As I said I didn't say you're wrong just I've never seen a date code as stated. I'm a beer geek and Julian or best by or pull by dates are common place . My maga corporate job did use Julian then went to a calendar date pretty well hidden in the series of numbers. To me they don't want you to know the date code otherwise well you get it
no offense was ever intended
& thank you for you info
cheers
