SURELY SOME ONE OUT THERE HASE DONE THIS OR THOUGHT ABOUT IT MIXING CLEAN WASTE OIL IN WITH THE FUEL. IF A MAN FILTERED IT SOMEWAY COULD IT BE DONE.

HERE IS A SITE WITH SOME INFO BUT KINDA PRICEY.

Page Title

WOULD LOVE TO HERE SOME INFO BACK.

My Dad has mixed used motor oil with diesel for his bulldozers and farm tractors for years. It obviously eliminates the need to dispose of the used oil but he always said it gave the fuel more power and allowed the dozer to push harder. I actually know a lot of farmers who do it. That being said... This is all older machinery. Emissions are not even mildly a concern and, honestly, neither is reliabilty. The tractor or dozer stops running in the field you quit working for the day and clean fuel filters, etc. .

I would absolutely never do this with my truck. Our engines are built with much finer tolerances than old farm machinery. Cummins does certify the B block to run on not only Diesel #1 and #2, but also Jet A and B, JP 5 and 8, and Kerosene. But alternate fuels are not the same as dumping used motor oil in your fuel tank.

As a diesel mechanic, I highly advise against it!

I've done it for a few years now without any ill effects. I've also used JetA as well. They all work just fine. I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Well... . There are many things that man can eat to stay alive and functional... Just watch Man vs Wild... It doesn't mean you should do it on a daily routine. With that said your engine should be treated with the same respect. Yes they will run on used oil. They will run on vegetable oil straight out of the bottle, Methane, Ether, Propane, Nitrous oxide with your favorite cocktail... . many different items. However used motor oil has many contaminants in it that are not good for the bottom end after so much use. Hence the need to change your motor oil. Now if it is no goog for the bottom end. . why would you run it thru the most critical parts in an engine? There are a huge amount of oxides, heavy metals and acids that build up in oil that react badly with other metals, and chemicals in the "system". Soooo... Will it run? Yes... . Should it be done? No. Will it create catastrophic failure immediately? Probably not. Excess wear and tear? Most likely. Is it worth the risk? Ask Bill Gates.

Jet A is a refined fuel. It has to meet lube and purity standards. Used motor oil doesn't. I'll gladly pay a little extra for clean, quality fuel. It amounts to cheap insurance against my truck stranding me alongside the road somewhere when it is least convient.

I can't understand why you would drain the contaminates from the lower end only to introduce them into the upper end. Have you ever looked up what is in used motor oil?

I've done this for years now. Make sure you drain your engine oil into a fairly clean container and then just dump it into a mostly full tank of fuel. It is filtered before it gets to the VP. 11-12 qts of oil in a full tank of fuel is about 10% or so. Runs fine - probably a bit more power than regular fuel alone. I have no tests to validate this but my thought is that the used engine oil has higher lubricity than the ULSD fuel nowadays so with this in mind the oil-fuel mix may actually be better for the VP than straight diesel anyways.

I do mix a lower % content in the winter months.

Oh, yea, getting ~3 gallons of fuel for nothing is nice too! :)

I've seen it done back when I was a diesel mechanic, but, under 2 conditions. The company I was working for at the time would 1) dilute down---5 gallons to every 150 gallons is the most. 2) The process in which they cleaned the junk out of the used oil is similar to cleaning used veggie oil. As long as you filtered the oil I don't think there would be a problem, but, diluting the right quantity into a 30 gallon tank is what I would worry about. I kinow with transmission fluid I don't put more than a quart for every full tank.

My ex father-in-law was a chemist for the Bureau of Mines, they did a test for the Air Force on waste oil disposal in to their bulk fuel tanks and found that 5% mix was good. . anymore than 10% was not...

I burn the used motor oil from my Cummins. There is a 5 micron filter right on the motor. It gets black from the soot but I've never clogged one. Diesels don't have the nasty contaminants that gasoline burners do so I wouldn't worry about that.

I have been adding my used oil to my fuel for 5 years now and 150k. When I first bought the truck within a few months the vp44 died. My injection shop told me that psi and lube in the fuel was a must to keep the vp44 alive. I filter my oil through aotu body paint filters and put it back in the gallon jugs, and add 1 gal. at a time. All that being said it gives me something to do with the old oil, so I don't have to dispose of it. Also saves me 4 dollars a fill up.
