Which Southbend?

bd-power stack

Just got my water/meth on last night... .

So far, I like it. Definitely helps EGT's, can feel the difference in power too. I think I need a little fine tuning now, but overall, I think it's worth the $$$$. Boy, with (2) 625 ml nozzles, the thing is thirsty-glad I bought a drum of methanol. I put a kit on a PSD last night too, tougher install, but had the same effects once done.

I got about 4-5 psi more boost, just as Snow says.

Matt

Matt, how long did the install take? Any tips or pointers. How fast does that little tank drain? Planning an attack at the moment.

Mike L.

Ditto, Looks like Jeffs for sure, and maybe mgoncavles too on Sat.

Any special tools that maybe we should have on hand?

Any additional parts that we need to get before the install?

Remember you guys can use your windshield washer resorvior too as it holds more water, the water usage goes down more with time, like the mileage getting better 3 months after a mod!

Jim

I'm on my way out to the garage right now to start on mine. Oo.

How did you orient the nozzles? The photo in the directions shows them both on the same side of the intake but is there any chance one cylinder (say #6) may get a richer or leaner mix than one at the other end (#1)?

I guess since only one cylinder sucks at a time this probably isn't a problem but I had to ask.

Mike

Install would have taken about 1. 5 hrs if I didn't have to do the PSD at the same time. Extremely easy, overall. I did my nozzles just like Jim's, two on one side of the horn, 5. 250" apart seemed about perfect for fittment. As far as thirsty, sitcks, I would empty the tank in three races (approx. 1/4 mi. ) against the PSD(Cummins wins each time of course:D ). Now that I have driven it not racing, it's actually pretty efficient as long as you aren't running WFO through the gears. An average day for me (40 miles and 5-6 uses of water/meth) will use about a third of the 1/2 gal tank. I plan on using both the 1/2 gal tank supplied AND my washer fluid tank. I just have the 1/2 gal hooked up for now. No special tools, and no additional parts, sticks. You may want a different switch (SPST) so that you don't have to cut a rectangular hole, but thats no biggie really. I have mine starting in at 8 psi and full at 23-24 psi, but I am still tuning too. Matt says to mount the pump below the bottom of the tank, but I mounted my pump above the tank for ease of install on both the PSD and my truck and it has not caused a problem yet.

Matt

Thanks for the tips.

The amount of fluid you are using sounds about right from everything that I have learned about this. 1/2 gallon is not a big tank by any stretch of the imagination.

120 miles to the half, 240 to a gallon,... 2400 miles to your 10 gallon tank jrandol?!? A little excessive isn't it?

My what a versatile fluid we can use. Fill the bottle for the wipers, fill the squirt bottle in the garage, fill the go faster tank. Oo.

EDIT - Bad math. Yes I did graduate, I have a piece of paper that says so.

You know my philosophy sticks. Go big or go home!! :D Actually, if thats all she burns then maybe I will rethink that 10 gallon tank. I plan to use the Methanol as a toy to really embarrass the PSD's and the Maxipads.

Story behind that one HOHN?

I think 5 gallons would be enough. I am going to poke and measure the engine compartment to see if there is a place to put a couple of 1 - 2 gallon tanks. I know of a couple of real good spots, just need to find a tank that is the right shape. Gonna be a busy day tomorrow.

By the mountingtips above, it sounds like there is a power switch, but if there isn't, it would not be hard to put one in.

Its on!!

Well mgoncalves, mlockner and I put on our stage 2 systems today in Laser Bobs garage! (Bob thanks a ton, your the man!! ) (Thanks as well go out to sticks, laser bob, and tajensen, Justin Mars for helping out!! )Install wasnt quite as bad as I thought it might be. Hardest part I thought was trying to find a place to mount the pump and the tank that it comes with. CAUTION!! Be very careful when tapping your air horn, that is some soft aluminum!! Those with the stage 2 kit, that hobbs switch is simple in its use but is hard to tune right on your truck. I think all 3 systems we installed today must of had the thing set to open up at 50psi or something. All 3 trucks can easily make 40 psi and we couldnt turn the pump on. You really have to back out that adjustment a significant amount.

Here are the results my truck saw when we dyno'd after the install party. Keep in mind, I think we all decided these things are going to take some time to understand and tuning is definetely needed to maximize the system

Performance mods on my truck:

Stage 3 injectors (extrude honed)

Blue Chip FMS Premium

Edge EZ (borrowed from sticks, thanks buddy!)

HT Turbo HX 40/35 hybrid Stage 3

Big Exhaust 5" w/ muffler

Stage 2 Snow Performance Methanol System

ATS Stage 2 transmission (TC & Valve Body)

AFE Megacannon

I ran near the same #'s I did 3 weeks ago in Denver (Denver= 520hp----- Fort Collins=518hp) These are #'s without methanol injection but everything else on my truck. Egt's without Water Methanol easily pegged 1650 in a matter of seconds :{

WITH WATER METHANOL

We all ran the el cheapo windshield washer fluid in our systems tonight. Who knows what % methanol it contained. Results are as follows:

555 rwhp (no torque readings, couldnt get the sensor to stay on the truck)

EGT's: 1353 !!!!!!! Thats a 300 degree reduction and 35-37 hp gain on Windshield Washer fluid alone!!!

I need to find me some Methanol and blend 50% Meth, 50% Water!!! Oo. Oo.

First impressions from me are that this system does and will do every bit as much as Matt Snow says it will do and more. I couldnt be more pleased with it, considering we literally slapped these things on as fast as we could and didnt have time to tweak the system much before dynoing, this thing rocks!!! Oo.

Price for either system is $329. 25 on the group buy, which ends the 10th (have to have order placed by then) Mine is a stage 2

jrandol The temp drop is better than mine odd but I don't run his pump but I'm going over to it as mine is going out.

HP gain on washer fluid is about right as a guess as water alone wouldn't gain you much if any power just EGT drop, 50/50 water meth is allot different, motor sounds different and it makes more power without a doubt (seat of the pants) even at my power level, for you and all the others I turn my system on at 30 psi with a hobbs switch and it seems to work great on the dyno, for the guys with the controllers you can just run them as you will and you'll be fine.

Tell Bob thanks from me for letting you guys use his shop!

I agree, Bob is a heckuva a smart guy on these trucks and an all around great person!! Bob, thank you a million times over for lending us your shop, some tools, and your help. We woulda froze to death if we had to do this in mgoncalves driveway!!

I gotta say it sucks being tail end charlie following you guys, hack wheeze.

The install is pretty straight forward. Nerve wracking drilling and tapping the intake horn, and the electrical can get a little confusing. BE #1 careful when tightening down your fittings. It does not take but a single slip with the wrench to render them useless. Like jeff said, the worst part is finding a location for the bottle. If you can get some extra hose, the bed is the best place, or just tap into the windshield washer bottle. If you can find another OEM coolant bottle that would be choice to slide in right next to the inter cooler on the passenger side.

A little more tweaking and tuning and things should be perfect. I was definitely impressed.
