Its been diagnosed, at 59,800 miles my water pump on my truck is going out. At least I got stranded at home and not out on the road. It leaks a good bit now and temps rise a little bit over 190 so its been parked. Ordered a new one today from the dealership, (got a nice discount on it). I was wondering what the steps are to change the pump, I heard its pretty straight forward. I searched the forum and didnt come up with to much. Incase my sig. doesnt work I have a 01 2500 4x4 Cummins Automatic (non HO). Thanks, Jed.

Easy as pie

1-Drain coolant

2-Remove serpentine belt

3-remove 3 bolts holding it in it will come straight out and is sealed with an o-ring.

4-clean mounting surface and install new one with new o-ring

5-install belt fill coolant

Mine start to weep a year ago. Ordered one from Cummins NW. 148 plus tax. No recon for the 2001. 5 at that time, so it was a new pump. Very easy to change. Almost as easy as the B150's in the boat. The boat has a hatch in front of end engine. Open the door and there it is. SNOKING

The water pump is very easy. While the coolant is out how are the water hoses? Might also be a great time to swap out the thermostat.

Thanks for all the info fellas. Can I just loosen the serpitine belt instead of taking it all the way off? And how do you go about loosening the belt on these cummins, (im used to gas motors)? Is it the same general principle to loosen the alternator bolt to loosen the tension? Thanks you all, Jed.

Put a ratchet drive into the square hole on the tensioner, relieve the tension, and remove. No bolts to loosen.

very easy

like was said above, drain the coolant, remove the belt, and there are only two bolt on the pump, at least on my 02. Got mine from napa for 60 bucks, brand new unit, and no core. I changed the belt, pump and thermostat in about an hour.

You might want to consider a coolant additive like Water Wetter (from Redline oil) or Purple Ice (from Royal Purple).

They both have lubricity additives that help the water pump last.

50K is pretty low miles for a water pump to fail.

If you change the 'stat, make sure you use the right one!

More CTD failures have been attributed to bad stats or Fram filters than just about all other causes put together.

Thanks for the help you all. I plan to do the pump friday or so. WDimig ("Wes", if you all know him) said he doesnt mind helping me incase. But again thanks for all the help.

Well the pump is on and the truck is running strong! How much coolant exactly does the truck take? Just to make sure. Thanks for all the help fellas. Jed.
