Water Pump Recall

I got my water pump recall notice today. Said as soon as they gather about a half a mill of them they will let me know. Notice said Diesel water pump. Maybe it pumps the water out of your fuel. Who knows :--)

I got a pre-recall notice last week too, I guess that was the part of the story on the TV news the other day about FCA working to inform customers about recalls, but not fixing the problems in a timely matter because 30% of people never get the recalled item repaired!

While driving my 13 Laramie Longhorn in town towing my 5er, the front bearing seized(water pump), and the shaft broke at that bearing.... I don't thing the whole process lasted longer than 1 minute before I felt a stiff power steering and pulled over.... water all over the place, and the pulley sitting in the fan shroud... nothing else damaged....

A call to the local dealer who said... sure we can repair it under warranty.... but we are 3 weeks behind... The towing service would tow the truck (CHRYSLER road service) but wouldn't tow the trailer... an offer of $100 bucks to the mechanic as a tip couldn't sway them to fix it now....

Long story but I called my road service to get both the truck and trailer off the road... Customer pay for a new lifetime water-pump almost $600.00... Now almost 90 days later I'm still waiting for my money back after filling out the forms and submitting them... This all before the recall....

They have a huge issue on their hands here.... there was no warning... just some noise and a minute later, broken belt and no power steering....
My failure was under 50K miles at the time....

Did you submit the tow bill as well??? If not then add it to your claim, you just might get it reimbursed...

Did you submit the tow bill as well??? If not then add it to your claim, you just might get it reimbursed...

I added the tow bill, $275 above what I mentioned above, to move both the truck and RV 10 miles.... but my personal tow service picked that up... at the time the truck had under 50K miles.... did I get all the questions answered...

I had a simular issue last year with my Alt. I finally got reimbursed just took a while. I'm hoping that my water pump lasts until they have Good parts in stock....

Anyone use the ACDelco 252-920 Professional Water Pump. From what I read they may be better quality then the OEM pumps. Have not ordered it yet, from what I can find out it's impressive. About $82.00 + shipping.

Amazon has them in stock and have a promotional coupon and free shipping. Whole thing runs you about 63.00 plus your state tax.

I just ordered one to carry as a spare for my annual trip to AZ.

With the environmental concerns with casting raw, cast iron or aluminum in the US there can't be a water pump made in this country that would sell for under $200.... the red tape evolved with the melting of metal and the gases that escape during that process is very hard to deal with in the US...

So its my guess that any of these pumps comes from off shore...

I used to deal with 3 casting manufactures, 1 in Mexico, 1 in Turkey and 1 in China.... each had their benefits... but I honestly believe that any good parts manufacture who is building parts for the assembly line as a tier 3 supplier or higher would build a quality part....

The problem with the water pumps as explained is the new impeller, smaller pulley and now higher speed that it has to run at.... thus someone who cut too tight of a corner on the front bearing of the pump.... and later failures...

I was under the thinking that the current Concentric design water pump for the 6.7L Cummins is manufactured in Itasca Ill,and shipped to Cummins Mid Engine.Concentric is a world wide manufacture based in the UK.

Kind of a crap shoot right now. If it's just to carry as a spare almost any pump that fits is OK. I wouldn't replace a working pump since the majority of them are supposed to be good.

Just drive it and don't worry.

Would it be less likely the affected pump fail in the winter (sub zero ambient temps)?

I would think the higher the pressure the more chance of failure. So summer time. The problem is no weep hole. No place to bleed off if a leak occurs in the seals. I made a little video on my opinion of the T51 failures if you are interesting.

ALL water pumps have the weep hole.....NOT ALL have the vent hole.
