I just replaced the water pump on an early 04 w/53k miles only. I had to replace my water pump on my 04 @80kmiles.

I used a napa on both trucks. my truck now has 165k on it,so I think the napa pump is the way to go. cost was $52.

here is a pic of the one I just replaced and the new napa.

Maybe..... then again some people have had the NAPA pumps go in 10-15k. Its a crap shoot and not even sure the Cummins pumps are that much better anymore. Darn sure the Gates pumps aren't.

I dont have any more experience with these pump in dodge trucks other than the single time i did mine 1000 miles ago. But from what others seem to say on these forums about any brand water pump is they are pretty much all crap. I work at a Case tractor dealership and for a long time case used Cummins 5. 9 and larger engines. Many of these engines operate at max load/hp for hours and hours at a time, have thousands of hours on them and ive replaced more belt tensioners than water pumps. Without anything to back this up, I think it is largely in part to truck owners using inferior coolant and also a lack of coolant filters on pickups. Not that a high percentage of tractors have water filters. I personally use fleeguard coolant for everything, but Ive heard Cat makes the best long lifecoolant. People can argue parentbore engines such as our engines dont need to worry about cavitation erosion, But quality diesel coolant provides so much more than cavitation protection compared to the 8 dollar a gallon universal green cheep stuff.

Also i forgot to mention my Shucks/O'reily auto parts water pump has a lifetime warrenty as long as i own the vehicle. Granteed that isnt going to help me if it fails 100 miles from nowhere, and isnt going to cover the hassle, but i least i wont be out my $55.

I do not think the issue is coolant... ... . water pumps were failing on new trucks with under 50k with good quality factory fill. then I stopped seeing it-pumps must have been fixed. same thing with replacement pumps-some good batches some bad batches. I have never seen coolant contamination on any generation ram trucks. They age well.

They can afford lifetime warranties for a number of reasons-the quality of the part is not one of them.

Also be aware of the 2 year warranty limitation on NAPA parts when used on a vehicle over 8,000lb GVW... ... That will bite you in the arse on any of our trucks... .

The only warranty repair I had on my '07 was the water pump at just shy of 50K with the factory fill. I'm happy to know I wasn't the only one.

well what can I say. I only know my genuine cummins pump went out @80,000 mi and the one I just replaced was also a genune cummins pump
w/53,000 miles. comparing the two pumps the n. a. p. a. pump looks like a better built pump to me. for one thing the shaft is bigger.

As the list of upgrades in the signature of of most every user can attest to, factory doesnt always mean quality. Im sure some bean counter in chrysler said "hey we can save $100K if we buy coolant from these guys. " Probably isnt the coolant, but the exact same water pumps on industrial applications that see way more hard living arnt failing anywhere near as often. Water filters also do more than filter contamination. They have chunks of additives that slowly dissolve into the coolant that help maintain rubber hoses and seals.

Maybe... ... that is a chinese built pump

Maybe, maybe not... . does not Dodge buy and sell Chinese parts? Napa has 3 pumps, a rebuilt one, a True-Flo one and a Delphi one. Delphi Automotive is headquartered in Troy Michigan with 150 manufacturing plants world wide. So at a possability of 150-1, it might be made in China which would not bother me any.

The last few napa water pumps in the 50$ range I have seen were marked as Gates and China ymmv.
Sadly all companies are buying parts from all over the world. The Cummins pump is not US built either.
I am just saying good luck with a $50 pump thinking it is an up-grade

the napa true flow pump is made in china, but the shaft measures . 625 or 5/8 . the cummins pump shaft measures . 475 or

. 025 less than 1/2. so I think it's made better. time and miles will tell I guess.

All I can say is that mine on my previous '99 is still running at 275k+. I replaced mine on the '05 last year at about 240k with a gates from Genos and it is good so far; time will tell. I am surprised at the failures pre-100k miles.

Time will tell as Bob says depends on the batch
