Just my 2¢. I've replaced my water pump several times, and made mistakes causing premature failures. Two pumps were straight from a Cummins distribution/repair center. I currently have a pump in, that has been in for over 6 years, and it is an inexpensive pump. The mistake I made was not refilling the block with coolant, prior to starting it up.
Past directions said the coolant system would purge itself of the air, after the engine warmed up. But, the location of the pump left a large void without fluid, and the water pump ran dry until the engine purged the air. Then you were supposed to top it off with fluid. Following those directions cost me two pumps, which lasted about a year or less, each.
The last time I replaced a pump, I took out the Thermostat, and refilled the block with coolant, then fire the engine up, until it purged the air. This way the pump never ran without coolant to lubricate it. If it even uses coolant as a lubricant. I just know these pumps don't last long when they are run dry.
