Changing to the Red Line I also noticed a change in "steering feel" making it lighter overall and more precice off center too. Have used the NAPA power steering fluid in other vehicles with good success too, but have not tried in it the Dodge. The NAPA fluid was smooth and long lasting in a GMC Suburban that I drove for a long time.

Michael

Now that I really like. Mine is stiff on center and makes you drive it.

Change the filter in this soon after install. It threads apart and the amount of stuff in the filter will be clear as to why change it soon at first.

Do I change it then or just clean and reuse? I don't think these come apart, I tried by hand but no luck. Maybe with a vice and big water pump pliers. If I need a new one maybe I will go ahead and change the fluid out to Red Line synthetic. If it is a throw away, I will cut it open and look at it.

It may make your steering slightly lighter and I noticed it on my truck using 245/75-16s and 235/85-16s. And with more precise steering control I was able to "SQUEEZE" about .2 -.3 more miles per gallon on long interstate trips after changing to the Red Line PS fluid. The increased "steering feel" also helped to dial in the rear tire pressure more quickly for various loads and towing. This may have helped MPG too.

So why don't you guys give me something hard?:D No Red Line anywhere here. Lubegard and Prestone, both synthetic. Summit has it for $131 a case of 12. Way cheaper than these two local products. Where do you guys get it?

I live close to Summit in Ohio. Lol And usually pick it up when going by on I 76! Summit does not have individual quarts available online? Never tried other Synthetic PS fluids....if you are going to change from NAPA fluid wait until you can find some Red Line to try is my recommendation.

Nick, by the way. Have you ever tried the Red Line ATF. Have been using the Red Line C-Plus ATF in the transfer case on my 1999 since 2001 and 39-40k miles and it was a big improvement over the OEM fluid.

Thanks Michael, between you and Gary I am convinced. Since I need to change the filter I might as well change the fluid too. Since I will need to change filters on both trucks I might as well get a case. They do have quarts but that won't last long if I keep changing the fluid/filters, until the filter is clean. Summit is always getting money from me, Lol...excellent store by the way and free shipping. The Ford holds 4 quarts so it is gonna stay like it is. It has a TRW gear pump mounted to the air compressor like a big truck, so it is good.

Sounds like a good plan to me Nick. I hope it works out for you as well as it has for me over the years. I use several of the Red Line products in a few different machines. Good stuff and a good company too.

Michael

Why didn't you tell me it was made in Texas, I would have ordered it yesterday:) I have never used Red Line products, I know about them but never see them. I use Valvoline or Napa ATF+4 in my T-case. What did you see for an improvement?

Red Line Oil is a good USA company! The transfer case is quieter at highway speeds and shifts more smoothly and precisely in and out of 4WD High and Low! I also noticed a very slight improvement in MPG too. Being quieter may be subjective, but it has been worth it for me to use the Red line for the past 17 years and more than 200k miles in the Dodge.
All the Red Line products I have tried work well.
Been tempted to try the Red Line 15W40 diesel engine oil but have not been able to convince myself to stray from Rotella since my first oil change!

Possible they changed the design, but, the one I used un-threaded in the sticker area. For a disposable $16 threads are just a leak risk really so I see they may have improved the design. In fact it's been discontinued for a new design per this website. I believe this is the parent company making it for Napa:

Nick, the more I hear and learn about how your 74 F-350 is equipped the more I like! Awesome truck!
Enjoy every mile.

Installed a 10 gauge ground wire from my top bolt on the PTO cover, same place my transmission temp sensor is and went to the battery, recommended by Michael.

You are correct. As soon as I got my new one home I had to check, sure enough, it unscrews. Too bad we can't just get the insert filter, but no part numbers on it. The magnet is huge and it does have bypass valve in it.

As I cross posted in your other thread, here is 2011 vintage filter with 30K+ miles on it. I have been running them due to rebuilt PS pump failures metal dusting the system. Yeah, replace everything, flush what's left and add filter in line from steering box zero pressure return. Filter will restrict hydro-booster and possibly hold the brakes on if it's on the hydro-booster return line. Filter alone if you can find it is likely $1 more than the whole filter assembly. They initially catch a bunch of stuff that's been floating around in the system unfiltered forever, thus, the early change suggestion.

Went ahead and drained the fluid again and installed the new filter. Then refilled with Red Line synthetic. After we get a few miles on the '91, I will do it.
