I have searched the forums for days looking for information on different wheels and tires since I will need to upgrade some time soon (sick of my 16. 5's and all their troubles). I really like the looks of the Stone crusher but am concerned about the two piece construction. In my search I found that some people have had bad experiences with them making noise or leaking air after a few years of use. What I would like to know is how common is this. Any comments from experience would be appreciated.

What I would really like is the Stone Crusher in a 16x9 size with 305x70x16 tires, which I have not fully decided on yet. I like the looks of the new Toyo Open Country M/T but it looks like they don't have many sizes yet. Right now I have the BFG A/T KO, which I really like except for the way it holds gravel when new and throws it all over chipping the paint. Maybe the BFG M/T would be the way to go. Any comments on tires would be great too. I never thought choosing wheels and tires would be so hard.

If you are thinking of the Toyo open country you might want to look at the 19. 5". Especially if you have a 2500. The 19. 5"s will carry a lot more. They also ride rougher. So, there are some +'s and -'s.

Weld wheels

I am also in the market for new wheels and tires. I have been talked out of the Stone crusher and any 2 piece Weld wheel by 3 local tire shops and a couple local 4wheel shops. They all told me basically the same thing is that they all seem to leak and there tired of returning them, so there not much interested in selling them anymore. Normally when you go to make a purchase they talk you into something so they can make the money, but never have I been talked out of something for the same reason so many times. I decided to look more towards the Centerline HT cast series, also been looking at Eagle alloys and Axis. If you like the look of the Stone Crusher, Eagle Alloy makes a similar wheel to the Stone Crusher and it is much cheaper, and I have heard no complaints about them. Good luck Dwayne

Thanks!

Thanks mediccummin, that's the kind of information I was looking for. I have decided to stay away from the Weld 2 piece wheels for sure now. I do like the looks of the American Eagle "copy" of the Stone Crusher and it even has a little higher weight rating (3400) so maybe those are the wheels for me. Thanks again for helping me decide, the TDR rulz! Mark

Yup it's true

Between me, my dad, my father in law and 2 friends, we have cracked probably 10 welds. No i am not exaggerating. And we are not talking about "wheeled trucks" here, just the occasional trip in the sand or what not. My recomendation would be to get in good with the dealer if you buy welds. They have always taken care of us. You would think we would smarten up and buy a different brand, but i guess we are just too vein. Love the look of the welds. The mountain crushers are sweet. By the way, mine do make a clicking sound. As i am typing this i am sounding dumb even to myself. :p

I've been running the American Racing Baja wheels on my truck since I think 2000, and not had one complaint about thier performance. Thier weight rating is 32-3500lbs can't remember anymore exactly, I had bent a stock rim and needed a beefy replacement. These wheels have been beat to death from hauling large tonages of hay to offroading to actually grabbing air (by mistake thanks to an unmarked dip in the road).

Morph.

I'm running the AR Bajas also. Not a single problem with the wheel's strength. I tend to do some off road driving, too.

They looked great until the road salt hit them... ... .....

HOW THE HECK DO YOU KEEP THESE THINGS CLEAN???? The winter kinda beat them up. I've tried polish with some success. Do you know any good ways of cleaning them???

Thanks,

simon

American Racing

I've got the AR Jammer. 3500lbs. Nice HD SS centercaps. Crome, there real easy to clean. IMO the brushed or paint finishes are harder to clean. LOL

www.americanracing.com PS I use the EagleOne Tire and Crome Cleaner

I have to agree with rubberneck, The welds do look sweet. And they are much easier to keep shinny. I've had eagles in the past and they don't shine like the welds. After a while the eagles I've had get dull and couldn't be polished because of the clear coat the eagles have. On the other hand, the welds require very little elbow grease to get them looking like new.

But, I have to agree with the guys who run the eagles, I've had no problems with the two sets I've had in the past. I've had four sets of welds and only one set were difective and thats the set I'm running right now on my CTD. Actually only two wheels are difective. My problem is not the leaks but out of round. I get a bouncy ride at about 25-30 mph. The two wheels require double the amount of weight to keep them some what balanced. I thought it was a balancing problem, but the wheels were out of wack. The day I contacted weld I found out the warranty was expiered by two days and they gave me crap about it and denied me two new wheels. I run 16. 5X12 super singles and will probably keep buying welds just because of there size selection and sharp looking wheels. :D

I wonder if the shine issue has anything to do with whether they are cast or forged. The Eagles are cast where the Welds are forged (forged wheels are less porous). Anyone have some thoughts on this? I was hoping to find a good forged wheel because they are lighter for the same weight rating generally. Anyone have any experience with centerline's H/T Comp sears of wheels? Looks like most of their wheels are rotary forged. http://www.centerlinewheels.com/sub_wheel.php?mw_id=7

Centerline

Cummins Power I will be able to answer the Centerline ? in about a month when they get done building my wheels. I just purchased the Centerline Dorsal 17X9 Chrome for $290 each, They are rated at 3200 each, and are much nicer looking than any Weld wheel. I have heard nothing but good reports on them. And the price is cheaper for a one piece forged chrome wheel that I won't have to keep shining up everytime I get them dirty. My neighbor has a set of welds and he shines them up every car washing, my stock alloys are holding up better than that. He hates his wheels. Centerline had the polished in stock but I wanted to try the chromes. They are backed up on the orders so it is taking about 4-5 wks for delivery. I'll post a picture and details later. I will be running BFG 315/70/17 which I found for $147ea. Later:cool: :D

Is there anyone running a 305/70R/16 on a 10" wheel? The BFG tires call for a rim width range of 8. 0 - 9. 5 for this size tire. I feel like 8. 0 is narrower then I want and I have not seen many choices for a 9. 0 - 9. 5 inch wheel. Loading is not an issue since I run empty most of the time. I'm just hoping to get about the same width as my current 33x12. 5x16. 5 tires. The wheels I have now are 9. 75" wide.

I have the stone crushers in 16X10. I have had them for a year now and do 4X4 my truck. The only probems I have had are dirt getting under a flap of metal. As the wheel goes around, it would make a creeking noise. The problem went away after a good cleaning. No air leaks. They look great also. I am running BFG 315/75/16 MT with them. I also understand that WELD has changed the manufaturing problem to get rid of the noise problems. If you like the look and don't need the forged rims, check out American Racing. A friend bought a set of them that look almost exactly like my stonecrushers for a 1/3 of the cost. They are cast though.

i'm running 305-70-16 bfg m/t's on weld stone crushers. no leaks, one was clicking weld sent me a replacement free of charge. ken

For those of you who have aftermarket wheels. Has offset been a problem or are the wheels you have mentioned have the deep offset like the factory wheels on the newer trucks? My concern is that I don't want the wheels sticking out to far. I am also concidering 305/70 16's and want my truck to still handle well especially with a gooseneck on. Thanks Seth
