Hey all,

How can I find out if my axle is 4000lbs, I am going to order some front seals but the cataloge ask me if its a 4000 lb axle or not? Any information will be greatly apprecited. BTW, I have a 93 D250 4x2.

Well for the 4x4's its between a 3500lb axel and a 4500lb axel. What no parts stores seem to have in their records is that if you specify that its a diesel, it's automatically the 4500lb axel. How that works out for a 2wd I'm not sure, but I'd bet if there's 2 choices you do have an entire heavier front end than a gasser. The diesels all basically got 1 ton front ends as far as the suspension and axel.

Look on the sticker on the cab panel by the door latch. Should be on there.

Even then it seems like you gotta take the old part in for comparison. I changed rotors once and I know from NAPA's parts book there are at least three options for front rotors. (It took me three trips and finally I was smart enough to take an old rotor in. )

Also, my hubs look entirely different than any others I've seen on comparable pickups.

So far as I know it is all factory installed options.

I agree that the sticker is meaninless many times. I tried getting brake parts by the axle ratings... no way, not even close.

Ended up I had a 1 ton axle, not what the sticker described.

What I did was buy every possible combination of parts (3 sets), brought them home, matched them up, and returned the ones that were incorrect.

Dang it,

I will check the sticker and see what it says, then I will order the front wheel seals and see if they are the correct ones, if not then I will order the other seals. The good thing for me is that the seals dont cost alot.

BTW, The rear axle causes the same problem. I've been to NAPA on multiple trips for those parts also.

If you had a D350, I'd almost bet you have the 4000# axle. But, being a 250, it's hard to say- I've seen both in the 3/4tons. Get the 1-ton seals, and see what happens. Or, if they dont cost much, get both sets and return the ones you dont use on your next trip to town.

I would say 95% of the time you're given a choice, your best bet is to go with the bigger version. Our trucks were built very similar to 1 tons even if you have a 3/4 ton. I've taken a lot of trips back to the parts store when I picked the smaller parts, but I'm still batting 1000 by going with the heavy duty parts.

Had the same issue with my rear drums... It was the bigger version... I believe 12. 5 by 3. I made it home with a 12. 5 by 2 and it definitely wasnt the right part.
