Changing only oil filter. But oil test will be delayed

ditched the twins, went super phat!

Hemidart,

Thanks for the info. I went to Cummins SW in Albuquerque Friday and told the guy what kind of truck I have - asked for the best filter for it. He brought out the Stratapore. Cost me 8 bucks and a few pennies. Guess he knows his stuff, eh?

HOWEVER... neither he nor any of his cronies in the service dept. had even heard about the KDP. Sheeesh :D

Fleetguard Stratapore and Cummins/Valvoline Premium Blue 2000 15W40. Every 5000 miles. Oil samples come back great! I don't understand why more people are not using the Cummins branded oil.

Bob

I've been using Amsoil 5w-30 3000 series with the dual remote filters. . SDF 80 and the BE-100 by-pass filter. . I also have the TS 106 air filter. So far so good with this combination. I originally was using Mobil Delvac-1 15w-40, but wasn't comfortable with this weight during the northern Minnesota winters getting down to -50 to -60.

I use Rotella oil with either Fleetguard or Mopar filters. I use Mopar when I need them faster (it's more convenient for me to get them).

By the way, I'm starting to like the smell of that Rotella for the first few hundred miles. :D

Buy Fleetquard = support Cummins

Currently running Amsoil 5W30 HDD oil. Just switched from my 2nd change of 15W40 Amsoil which I ran 20,000 miles using standard filtration.

Before going synthetic I used Delo 400, 2nd change Walmart's Super Tech 15W40 oil, then 3rd change back to Delo 400. Super Tech oil has diesel specs and showed great results on my oil analysis, very close to Delo 400.

I have run Baldwin and Napa Gold filters when I can't get a hold of the Stratapore filter locally. I think Fleetguard and probably Amsoil filters are the best. I've noticed the oil flow holes in the tops of the Fleetquards are larger than the Baldwin or Napa.

A great side effect of buying Fleetquard filters is the support it gives Cummins. Cummins is feeling the pinch these days due to the drop in Dodge Truck sales. The filter business contributes a sizable chunk to their bottom line, so I consider buying Fleetquard filters a great way to help support my favorite engine company.

I'm currently using Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 HDD and Amsoil filters (SDF 26 full flow/BE-100 bypass).

BTW Softe, the full flow Amsoil filter for the Dual Remote Bypass filtration system is an SDF 26 not an SDF 80... the SDF 80 is the direct replacement for the OE (full flow) filter.

Fleetguard LF3894 StrataPore along with Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40.

Have thought of going to Delo, for a less expensive conventional oil or Amsoil for a synthetic. The Amsoil is about 4 times the cost of the Valvoline, and I wouldn't feel comfortable running the Amsoil 4 times as long as the Valvoline, at least not without some additional filtering and sampling.

Always Fleetguard/Mopar filters and (I know this will be a shocker) Mystic 15-40 for the oil. I haven't seen this oil sold outside of Oklahoma but it works great.

Where to get oil?

Where can I get the Cummins premium blue oil or the Rotella? I looked all over Cummins site and found filters but no oil???

Is the Rotella a Shell product, and if so, can you get it at the local Shell station?

Also, if I show up at the local Dodge dealer for my first change (I have seen posts about getting the filter off the first time), will they have a fit if I bring my own oil and filter?

Thanks.

Rotella is a shell product. I buy mine at a marine store since it is used frequently in boats. A shell station could probably order it for you. Otherwise, chesk with the truck places, they would probably have it.

Thanks for Rotella Info

Thanks for the info EMDDiesel! I have to make a run to West Marine to pick up something for my boat, so I'll check there.

I run the Fleetguard LF3935 and Cummins Premium Blue and change it every 5000. I have been thinking of changing to either the Premium Blue 2000 or Amsoil 15w40, but I've always heard that changing to a synthetic can cause oil leaks in an engine with a few miles on it. I talked to a Cummins tech (at Cummins NW in Renton-very helpful) and he said that happened when synthetic first came out because it had Teflon in it, but shouldn't be a problem now. Any thoughts on this?

How often is everyone changing their oil?

It seems like there are a lot more people using the Rotella or Delo than the Premium Blue-is there a reason for this?

I have heard the "Synthetic oil causes seals to dry out" story for years. That USED to be a problem, especially if you used it for a long time. But i have not heard of it happening for years. They seem to have cured that problem. I would not worry. I have used Rotella 15W-40 up untill this week when i switched to Amsoil synthetic 5W-30. I also have the Amsoil Dual Bypass kit.

I was doing oil changes every 5-7k miles with the conventional oil. Now, i will do oil and full flow filter changes every 10k miles and the bypass filter every 20k miles with sampling every 6k miles. I will keep to that schedule provided i get good sampling results and i dont start towing any heavy stuff. We will see what happens.

Fleetguard LF3552 at 4K miles and Royal Purple 15W40 once per 12K miles for the first 110K miles. I've added an OilGuard LFS 60 Bypass Oil Filter and will go to 25K oil changes with the LF 3552 at 6k. Currently 17K into the extended drain.

On my first CTD, an 89, I used Cummins Blue, Cummins Premium Blue 2000 (even when Cummins and Bob Patton were against using a higher grade oil in the 6BT), Shell Rotella T and Valvoline Turbo for the first 70K, changing the older LF 3449 and oil every 3K. Then switched to Royal Purple 15W40 for the next 100K, changing the LF 3449 every 3K and oil at 6K the first two times and then 12K as I understood how good an oil RP 15W40 is.

This truck was sold to buy my 96 but the new owner is still using RP 15W40 and has over 300K on it.
