I know there are some very knowledgeable folks here when it comes to Religion so I have a question. First let me say this is a genuine question. I have no hidden agenda. I just want to know.

If we are to learn about God by reading what people wrote about Jesus and Jesus was sent to spread the word of god. What did Jesus write? Surely someone sent to spread the word of god would be literate.

Again I want to stress that I am just curious and am not here to bash anyone.

Thanks

Good question, and I'll take a crack at it. As far as I know, there are no known writings from Jesus himself. Also, the four gospels that document His life on earth were all written after His death (and resurection).

I agree, but don't think Jesus was unlearned. According to the Gospels, he spent much of his youth studying at the Temple, and in one of his encounters with the Pharisees, he took the scroll and read to them from it.

I concur I don't believe there were actual writings of his. However... .

Supposedly the closest/earliest thing we have to Jesus's own words were written in the "Gospel of Thomas". Written around 100-200AD written in Aramaic. It was rediscovered" in 1945 in the Nag Hammadi library. Its a great read for those who read the bible.

Even though Jesus didn't take pen in hand literally, since he was a man with the Spirit of God indwelling, he did inspire men to write the 66 books canonized as scripture.

2 Peter 1:21 - For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

2 Timothy 3:16 - All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Read and pray for if you do :

Luke 11:10 - For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Very thoughtful question tractorface! In all my growing up in church and church schools I don't recall this question ever coming up before.

I wound venture that Jesus was a very learned individual in the OT scriptures and certainly he had the ability to write. Remember the incident recorded in Mark 2:42-52 when he was 12 years old and spent 3 days at the temple in Jerusalem where the priests and scholars were utterly amazed at his knowledge and depth of understanding.

Thats right, I forgot that. Then he hooked up with a hot chick that was raped by a preacher, and then posed nekkid for Playboy!! What an odd twist!

By golly, last night I remembered Jesus did write something. When they brought the woman caught in the act of adultrey John 8. Jesus stooped down and began to write on the ground and her accusers left one by one.

"Go thy way and sin no more"

Now we are getting somewhere

It seems to me Jesus must have left behind some written documents. I kind of figured that someone would tell me they were destroyed by such and such. That would make sense to me. I just would have expected those that wrote what we do have would have mentioned it. I am one of those that think more documents pertaining to Jesus's life were destroyed than survived. I figure that is why there is so many diverse religios around. People were left to fill in the blanks as they saw fit or as they "thought" they remembered things.

Thanks

I'm not a knowlegable as others here on this.

Though Jesus himself never wrote anything (as far as I'm aware of) many of the words he spoke are in the Bible. In my Bible theyre written in RED ink.

I hope this helps.

Well

What bothers me about that is this. Look how easy it is for the media to mis quote someone now. Most of the documents in the bible were written many many years after the words were spoken, the people who wrote the bible may not have even been present when the words were spoken. I have a hard time believing that the quotes are very accurate or even convey the message that was intended. That is why I am so curious, I want to know as close as possible the real story.

hey all--id like to take a swing at this.

IMHO I believe that Jesus didnt have time to sit down and write. He was always doing things. ie, teaching people, interacting w/ people, helping people, loving people, serving people, praying, etc.

I also believe that He wanted people to tell His story (about His life). Maybe to show He wasnt boasting, or maybe to prove that He really is who He claimed to be, there could be several reasons. But what is more likey to be believed, what you write about yourself---OR what people write about you?

I also believe that actions speak much louder than words. I believe He thought the same also. Thats why He lived His life the way He did. Not for Himself. Not for His gain. but for us, all of us.

tractorface--and everyone. let me ask ya'll a very personal question (you dont have to respond back--just something to think about). i feel its a very important question about Jesus. Here are three options. Either Jesus Christ is a lunatic, liar or saviour. you have to choose which one.

May those who seek, find. As for me and my family--we love and serve Jesus.

The Bible is the "real story". Another thing you should think about - the men who were closest to Jesus when he was physically here were all murdered... ... ... one by being crucified upside down on a cross because he felt he wasn't worthy of being crucified in the same manner as Jesus. Would all these men who knew Jesus better than anyone refuse to denounce Him and go to their death for a lie?

Not sure of your true motives for asking this question, but I am sure that some day you will find the answers you're looking for. That day comes for all of us. It's already come for Sam Kinison. Kinison thought you could live life in any manner you wished, as long as you asked for salvation right before you die. He thought he had it all figured out, then he died suddenly at a young age in a car crash. Did he have time?

The authors of the New Testament -

Matthew, Mark, Luke, Peter, and John were among the first disciples that spent a lot of time with Jesus.

Jude was a half brother of Jesus.

James was a half brother of Jesus.

Paul wrote most of the books in the New Testament.

Luke wrote the book of Acts.

It is assumed that Paul wrote Hebrews.

The Apostle John wrote the Gospel, I, II, III John and Revelation.

The Gospels have very many actions, parables, etc. in common.

There are a lot of the Old Testament verses quoted in the New Testament by Jesus and the writers of the books.

Jesus amazed the Pharisees and the scribes in the synagogues with his knowledge of scriptures and everything else.

Did Jesus write any of it? - he was the Word. Gospel of John - Chapter 1 - Verse 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God.

I John 1 - verse 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

Sorry you are not sure of my motives Tractorseller. I was raised in a strict Chatholic family, asking intelligent reasonable questions always resulted in a response just like yours. Basically believe it or else! I'll dare you ask those questions. Blind faith is the only way.

I am looking for intelligent answers. We ARE talking about History here, are we not? Oh yeah, which bible are you referring to? The one in the desk drawer at the Hotel in Utah or New Jersey, cause they are different. I have no problem trying to sort fact from BS, this seems to bother some, for that I apologize. Either way, it seems you have it all figured out... . so do a lot of others, trouble is your not all telling the same story, not even close, that is why I am asking these questions. With all the arguments over teaching evolution etc. I found it interesting. Please do not assume you know what I believe because even I am not sure anymore :)
