Hoefler If you ever want to move to Carlisle PA I blong to North Middleton Fire CO and we could use some like you. Nice Job. Here are web www.northmiddletontwpfire.com
I know it can be done using chest type boxes ( lids on top ) for sure. I would have to do some measuring to see if the under mounts ( like on the brush trucks ) can be used.
Not sure if I understand your question, I used the factory main tank and removed the auxiliary tank. The fill and vent hoses are attached to a pipe I welded through the frame rail of the bed. With the water tank removed, you can easily access it to remove or install them.
I don't really see a fuel tank in the pictures of the newer construction you are working on. The pink rag seems to be over it. Then I don't see a filler cap on the complete bed so I wondered about what mods you made to it.
The pink towel is covering. I use wet towels to cover the tanks while I am welding around them. I built a box that is mounted in front of the tool box on the left side that the filler neck is in. I'll have to remember to try and get a picture of it.
Did you cut the sheetmetal out on a cnc or with a torch? Do you remember off hand the dimensions for the sheetmetal?
I never though of using square tubing. I have c-channel that i was planning on using but I like your idea better. I would think that c-channel is a lot heavier than square tubing.
Thanks for a great post and all the pictures. That was just the inspiration I needed to start my flatbed project. My challenge will be the sheetmetal cutting and the hard points machining for the 5th wheel.
All cuts were from a plasma cutter and band saw. I had my supplier shear and break my pieces to the dimensions I needed. Tubing is stronger that C channel and lighter for the the size needed for the strength. Look at our frames, they are all boxed now. I would use a regular fifth wheel and mount the rails to the bed or incorporate them in the top skin.
