I have a good friend who recently bought an '11. He went to do deletes this last weekend and noticed the oil on the dipstick felt like it had a fine grit to it. Both dealerships he talked to (none have felt it yet) think its just the soot. That was my first thought as well, soot from the EGR/regen which is probably higher on a new motor that isn't broke in yet. The motor has just shy of 3K miles on it, and its the factory oil.

So for those of you with emissions stuff intact what does your oil feel like?

Will check in a few minutes and get back to you.

OK. Not really what I would call "Gritty", but 3000 miles after oil change, oil is absolutely black and sooty.

I use Synthetic oil and Fleetguard Stratapore.

Thanks... . He had it changed and the tech's said it was normal (not surprising, but at least its documented)...

I changed my oil last night and it's certainly not as smooth as used gasser oil, which is where he is coming from.

I changed my oil for the first time this weekend at 4100 miles. I would say that the oil has a lot more soot and small "grit" than my old 01 did. I noticed in cleaning the drain pan and funel more particles than the other pickup.

What sort of bypass filtration is needed to remove this "grit".
If it is big enough to feel, why isn't the stock filter removing it?

The OEM filter is 95% efficient at 30um, so not the most efficient filter. Consider a stratapore which is 100% efficient at 30um, and 98. 7% at 25um, or the Donaldson ELF7349 which is 100% at 20um, and 98. 7% at 15um.

The Amsoil bypass is the way to go, 2um at 98. 7%.

A bypass is a good idea on every diesel. I recommend the Amsoil, better filtration and cheaper than the FS setup, but they both do a good job.
