Owning it for about ten days now 550 miles dry roads to start out with now 19 inches of snow. No hauling or towing yet. I like the smooth power. Seamless and I like the braking seamless as well My old truck had a 4 speed and 89 percent torque converter. When it upshifted in was a jolting event also down shifting. The exhaust brake was also very abrupt by comparison. New truck has a bit more power and doesn’t need to be upgraded or the transmission to hold the power or use the x brake. This was expensive on the old truck. The lift pump issues on the old truck. The trouble and expense etc. I had to put front tow hooks tow mirrors and airbags on old truck as well. All time and money Rino lining now from the factory etc. so to make the old truck haul the 3000 lbs slide in cost a lot of money and time. This new truck seems to be ready to go out of the box. Very nice. Time will tell on how it holds up and I can see fuel mileage might be less I think. And I loved the sound of my old truck. Folks could hear me coming. Some folks didn’t like it as much as me. I always had to shut it off going thru a drive thru and restart. What a pain and I had to by a tweeter for the turn signals to hear them. Granddaughter and others that rode with me it made them crazy. Needless to say I’m enjoying the quietness of this new truck.Truck is very stable on the road. Brakes are very smooth and it will haul the truck camper much better being a 3500 vrs 2500 Then there’s the reliability of a new truck So I’m pretty happy with this new truck so far. And I made a old age life choice with the warranty . It was the right decision for me. I will miss the old truck but time to move on.

The push button 4 wheel on the dash is just really awesome but the buttons are a bit small and to close together Could be bigger and spaced a bit apart for us seniors to see

My 18 is noisy. I always shut it off in a drive thru. I don't like it, but it is what it is. I notice in RV parks the 19s and newer sound like the newer Ford and Chevy models. This one is old school..

First Cummins?

My 18 is quiet. 19+ is quieter but not that much.

I wouldn’t call the sound of a 13-18 old school by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe something is wrong with yours?

I ask at every oil change is it too noisy? Always normal is the response. Yes first Cummins. But I do think something is wrong. The EB rattles sometimes, but it's been on constantly since new. Only 31k miles. Probably just me but the last Burger King I had to shut it off. Couldn't communicate..

Drive my 24valve 2001 Sport for a few days then you won’t know your 18 is running.
24V are the noisiest of the lot. I had a 4" Magnaflow SS exhaust with a straight through muffler. I was not allowed to go for donuts on Friday mornings at 6AM, as I wake up everyone in the RV Resort. They have the sharp injector noise the the 12V did not have. And the last year or two did not get the under the hook liner.

Fuel mileage is not going to be very good compared to the 1999 5 -8 mpg is pretty huge But I guess you pay for the power

Horsepower and torque cost fuel.

Despite being burdened with the emissions equipment these motors are very efficient. My 18 is generally within 5% of my 05, plus or minus. The 05 was built for power and efficiency and put the stock 05 motor to shame in both power and fuel economy. My 18 is cheaper to operate than the stock 05 was, so I really can’t complain about the mileage, power, or emissions.

I’m still out on the fuel mileage Only 900 miles. Very early cold here. 10 below zero 10 above. Lots of idle warm up. Roads are very iffy for good mileage to show time will tell to soon. My pickup is kept in a garage so it starts out sort of warm which saves very hard cold starts

Try to limit your cold idle time. It’s better for the motor and emissions to let it idle for 30 seconds or so and drive it easy then it is to let it idle to warm up.

Watch your hour meter. Cummins considers anything over 10 minutes per hour of operation excessive, that’s 16% idle time. 3-5 minutes is the most they say you should ever idle the truck cold, and even that’s more than is needed.
