Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What is the best built trany.

A buddy of mine has asked me to check with you 2nd gen guys, about what builder of his automatic should he use. His truck is a 2001 2500 SWB 4X4 SLT auto. I'm sorry I don't know the HP, except that it was shipped to Canada as a new truck, then he bought it used in Calif. I've owned an NV5600 and currently a G56 so I wouldn't know were to start. I know he wants a beefed up trany for towing at or over the GCVWR. He has 150K on the original trans and he is starting to budget his funds for the build. He was going to call the venders in Diesel Power for quotes, so I asked him to wait until I can ask you 2nd gen experts.

DTT, Goerends, and Garmons come to mind. Can't go wrong with any of them. Where is he loacated?

I personally have a Goerends. It's going to be hard to beat his product and no one will beat his support.

We are in SoCal. Goerends came to my mind as well as DTT, but because I don't follow the Auto world, support is also important. I have heard of horror stories were the trany had to be reinstalled due to a failure from the rebuilder. He is looking at reputation as well, and is basing his decision on that, as well as price. He has complained of not having any power in sand, and won't 4X4 it, to avoid the embarrassment from the Ford's and GM's not having issues. He has lowered his tire pressure's and it didn't help. I believe he has a Torque Converter issue or his rear gear is to low of a ratio, and he doesn't know what it is.

Browns Diesel in Riverdale does a mean transmission also. Rather than shipping across country you might want to drive a bit to have a closer builder. There are other decent shops in the LA\San Diego area also.

DTT and Goerends are my picks. I went with DTT (Goerends wasnt very well known at the time I had mine done at least to me) and have been pleased as punch with it for the last 150k. I cant speak to Goerends but DTT has a list of DTT trained and certified installers and there is surely one in SoCal. Worth a call anyway.

I loved the DTT in my '95. Brown's Trans in Ventura works on DTTs. Good service.

I have DTT and they are very helpful and will work with the install work with your transmission guy, We bought a crashed truck with a DTT in it and we called them and they will help our trans guy with the install and wiring and was not a problem for my boys truck. If he decides to use it. or we may end up selling the trans and engine with about 80,000 original miles on the truck less on the trans.

Goerend has about a one month lead time on builds right now. I ordered near the early part of July and it shipped last week. Driving to Brown's Diesel in Riverdale tomorrow to have the Goerend trans installed. Also Brown's is an associated Goerend installer so I didn't have to pay either core up front.

I have a DTT and like it just fine. But don't forget Suncoast. They built trannys for several Fords in a fleet I used to manage and did a great job, with great service.



Most of these builders have authorized installers in many areas. Honestly, I'd say you can't lose if you buy from any of the top builders, so find the one with a nearby installer to take care of you.

I have not read any of the replies to your question yet, but the answer is there are several excellent transmissions available and they are all probably about the same money. Not listed in any specific order based on quality are:



ATS, Suncoast, Goerend, DTT



There are probably a few more but I don't recall names now. I think as important as perceived quality is after the sale customer service and the availability and skill of the installer.

I had a locally well known trans shop rebuild my trans with DTT components and after 70k miles I couldn't be happier. Dad has an ATS and I am not sure he would go with them again, mostly due to customer service issues.

I had LeftCoastDiesel in Concord, CA build me a heavy duty diesel transmission for my 97. It has a Goerend heavy duty kit, triple disc converter etc, and is good to 700hp and beyond.

It's an amazing thing to have power going to the ground now.

I rebuilt my own about 35K ago with a heavy duty converter and upgraded valve body from Dunrite Converters in Oregon. He sometimes advertises in TDR. Been very happy with it. I put in new internals too and have an Edge Juice with Attitude, 4" MBRP Exhaust, and K&N intake, so decent additional power over stock. No issues whatsoever. I highly recommend and it was a lot cheaper to go that route over suncoast, Goerends, ATS, etc if you have the knowledge to do the work yourself. It was relatively easy to do and cost me around $2000 total about 3 years ago.
