Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Boost gage question

Hey everyone, This is my first post. I have a 98 extra cab that I bought used. The truck goes like a, well the best quote I've heard so far, an 8000 lb. corvette. I can't see any box or add on performance anything. Looks like stock everything. If you don't give it little throttle when starting out, it dies out very easily. Anyone that drives it kills it two or three times before they get it right. Black smoke thick at full throttle. Turbo kicks in hard at 1500 rpm I love the truck but really need the back doors, so have an '04 on the barge, expected delivery next week. I would like to be able to tell the future owner what was done to the truck to increase perfomance.

One more clue... Had some work done to the timing cover due to a dowel pin that fell out and the teck said the fuel pump had something done to it. But didn't know what. Any ideas?

Thanks, Bud

Welcome to the TDR

If it is a 12v it will not have a "box" There are a lot of things that can be done to a 12ver from easy things like sliding the stock fuel plate to replacing it with a reground one. And adjusting the pump timing, and other adjustments to pump. If you look at some of the faseners to see if there signs of being tampered with it might tell ya if the pump has been apart one way or another. This is all I can tell ya I am not an under valved truck owner. :D

Good Luck

Welcome to the TDR, Bud

To check for tampering, look at the AFC housing on top of the injection pump. The bolt in the top left corner is supposed to be non-removeable. Look to see if it's been removed and replaced. Also look for paint peeling, or scratched on the housing. If so, the torque plate has most likely either been slid forward, or replaced with a different one. If you don't have gauges, I would suspect slid forward. On the side of the pump is a plug that should have a thin metal wire running through it. This is a locking wire, that must be cut to be removed. If it's not there, there could be a Governor Spring Kit put in, unless one was put in from the top. If it has been messed with, be careful running it full throttle for very long, if you don't have an EGT gauge.
