The only time I would even think of using synthetic if I was in temperatures 0 or below 0 . As states in the manual. We get down around 10 here, on occasion .I am changing mine tomorrow 3 gallons of 15-40 T4 Rotella . 12.97 per gallon at Walmart :)

Yup, I bought the 5w40 as a mistake. I had every intention on going with 15w40. I just get so excited on Amazon with that 1-click ordering. :D Next time I need to verify what I got before draining my existing oil.

What method?

On a manual transmission truck it is easiest to put a filter wrench cap on and go straight up through the bottom.(Ratchet and a couple of extensions) I don't know if there is something in the way (preventing access) like transmission cooler or cooler lines on the automatics.

I know some will tell me that i've thrown money because I've been buying amsoil for 25 years. I am trying some different synthetics now based on recommendations from this forum and from reading other experiences. I probably am wasting money also on the amsoil bypass filter that i run to supplement filtration of the full flow filter. I have that mounted on the frame rail just below the stock oil filter so i can reach them both from below on the passenger side. I probably also waste money by not checking amazon every day for their lowest fuel filter prices (which vary quite regularly). But (Really) how many of us don't spend alot of $ on our trucks? I bought mine for $40,000 and it's just a base model with a bunch of options.

It's only been debated / discussed no less than 999 times that on a 2013 & up 3500 truck OR a 2014 & up 2500 truck the new frame enhancements are the source of no longer being able to service the oil filter from below. Your 2013 2500 still has the old style frame. The transmission (G56, 68RFE, or AS69RC) has ZERO bearing as to removal of the oil filter from below.

Changed mine this afternoon. Went from 15W40 to 5W40 since we are getting below 0 now here in Colorado. Through the top, no spills. It is a pain having to remove the intake to get the filter out. Put the winter cover on today as well.

Ah, Yes! Thanks for the reminder. I knew there was a difference in the 2013 2500 Rams. But with all of the talk of removing the intake and changing the filter from the top, i was thinking that the difference was from the top.

You just helped me realize why some are able to use the Oregon chain saw lube for the front drive shaft. On the 2013 2500, there is a frame cross member right below the lube point (preventing access). If that cross member was moved 1-2 inches, there would be room. I'm guessing the frame change on the 2014+ 2500 (& 2013+ 3500) moved the crossmember so that those with the new frame have room to use that tool. So (hopefully without getting too far off topic), I can say that your comment just helped me rarionalize a whole different issue i had encountered last week.

A very happy New Year to all!

Look on AMZ/OIL site and they call out either the OE or Universal ATF. Yes I did just the aMZ/OIL Universal Synthetic ATF in the transfer case. I will be using it in my Aisin this spring when I get back to my home shop.

I just discovered that with the "preferred customer program" at AMSOIL....... i can get 2.5 gallons of full syn 15w/40 OE diesel oil for the same price as 1 gal of redline diesel full syn on ebay or amazon. And the quality is probably about the same.

Don't know if I wrote it down wrong but I run 15W 40 Royal Purple and it is a 12qt system but 12qts overfilled my sump by approximately a qt. I just changed to this brand and I am using it in motor, Transmission and Transfer case as recommended by royal purple. I just rebuilt my transmission at 194,000 miles and I believe what caused it to fail was a faulty vibration damper. Book says to check every 30,000 miles which I neglected to do. When I checked it it was bad bad bad. After spending around 7500.00 dollars on parts for my transmission I wanted everything to be as close to perfect as I could get it. I hope this oil will make a difference. If you are going to rebuild your transmission you should try Goerend for your parts. They are #1 in my book.
This rebuild turned my truck into an animal. One more thing if you want info on transmissions or anything else go to Scribd and you want believe the info in the books they have.
