I am looking at a '99 2500 sport. I have heard rumors of some blocks cracking and some lift pump problems. The truck has 129000 mi. What are some areas to look at when considering a purchase.

Look at the left front side of the block for a cast in 53 and ask for a receipt for an injection pump replacement... ... ... ... if it hasn't had one yet it won't be far off.

It is not a 53 block. Other than asking if the injection pump as been replaced is there any orher areas of concern? Thanks for the info so far. Are there any other areas of concern I should be looking for. The trip computer says it is only getting 9 MPG. Is this normal, any concern?

Thanks, Will

If it is not a 53 what is it. The 53 will sometimes also appear on the passenger side below the filter, not always on the driver side. Good luck.

Yeah, 9 MPG is not normal. With all my mods, I get 14MPG

If it is a 53 block and it has more than 100,000 it will probley be alright. If they make it past 100000 they usally do just fine. And the sports have nothing to do with lift pumps all stock dodge lift pumps are a joke. Buy a Fass system and save an injection pump.

Take it to a diesel shop and have the fuel pressure checked. It should be putting out at least 12 lbs. if the pressure drops out the bottom when you floor it than the lift pump is bad. even if you replace the pump that second damage has already been done to the injection pump and pump replacement is almost guaranteed. basically find another truck unless you have $1,600+ dollars just laying around. If the pump has good pressure ask for the pump replacement reciept, b/c if it has more that 50,000 on it then the lift pump has had time to fail. and if they have had to buy the lift pump make sure they have replaced the injection pump to. If tthey haven't replaced the injection pump its only a matter of time.

For what it's worth, my 99 had a 53 Block and I put 183K on it with no problems before I sold it. Injection pump was original, lift pump was replaced once and I always monitored fuel pressure. I did have to replace the head gasket at 175K. This truck was completely stock.

Good Luck!
