I went to school to be a ford mechanic but I quickly realized I wasn't cut out to work on other peoples cars. So I visited the local Coast Guard safety office and tested for my merchant marineers engineering endorsments.
I've worked for the state for six years now on the ferry system, the last year as a licensed engineer. Basically I'm in charge of the engine room watch. We operate and mantain the main engines and light plants. The state runs EMD's, German MAK's, Wartsilla's and Enterprises.
The EMD's are great engines but when you really need some horse power, 6,000 to 7,000, I prefer the old Enterprises to the newer MAK's and Wartsilla's. Massive, slow turning V-12 and V-16's. They sound almost as good as my Cummins
