One thing I did on my 92 12v to help the ride, was having the Kelderman rear suspension put on it, made a big difference. Maybe not as good as the new trucks, but it was completely tolerable

No need to discuss, just do a search.

#1 major possible failure on 12 valve :KDP. Search it, count the number of threads.

#1 major possible failure on 24 valve, tie, injection pump failures and 53 blocks cracking. Do a search on either one.

I think its safe to say NOONE would bet money that there is more KDP failures than VP-44s or 53 blocks.

12 valves rule-P-pumped or the old Rotaries, I'd take either one before a 24 valve.

Seriously though, just look at the handle, "2broke2smoke". Bet all those valves made him that way. :-laf I just doubled my stock horsepower for basically no cost! Installed some used injectors from a friend, ground my stock fuel plate, put on a BHAF and removed my restrictive exhaust. Now, granted, your truck came stock with more power, but what would it cost you to gain 150 HP? I can also run several alternative fuels without worrying about damaging my injector pump. I can work on it myself. I like my 12V.

What year did the 12V trucks get four wheel anti lock disc brakes? SNOKING

My point is that these engines come in trucks, in 2001. 5 they completed the gestation of the 2nd gen trucks with the addition of the rear disc brakes. I will live with the engine I got in 2001. 5, as the 2nd truck was at is best in that model year. After that it began to be born with missing fingers and toes. SNOKING

Anyone????????

If it is a real late 12V check the 53 block issue. They remove the front cover and install a tab on a bolt or two to hold in the dole pins. SNOKING

360,

Welcome to the world of 12V ownership! :) What year is your truck? Fill in your signature so we know what truck we're talking about. Not all 12V's are the same.

Next I would suggest that since you now have a 12V that you come on over to the good side of the force, the 12V forum. If you go to the "12 Valve Engine and Transmission (1994-1998)" and look above the list of threads there is a section called "FAQ-Frequently asked questions". In that section there are threads that contain the knowledge of most of the great 12V jedi masters. The most popular one is "What is a KDP and how do I fix it?". It will tell you what you want to know about the KDP. I personally bought the kit from TST. The instructions were great. I did not use the gasket maker they sent, I got a new gasket from Cummins.

As far as the "53 block", as SNOKING said, I have not heard of any "53 blocks" in a 12V except for a couple of '98's. Search the forums for "53" (I've found it helps to use the "Search Titles Only" feature and I like to view them as "Posts", not "Threads". More meat and less fluff that way. ;) ).

HI Its a 95 with the early i guess 160 pump but I will be getting a trans from DTT along with 370's, delivery valves, 3K GSK, The KDP is #1 Priority and wile I got the front cover off I will advance the timing, And I am getting an ATS manifold, and a cam plate..... I did my home work before purchaching a 12 valve... . other thing I like is the all mechanical trans (minus the lock up and O/D). I cant wait to get rid of the 24 valve... all that damn electronics... and not to mention the 53 block!!!! I shure am glad to have a 12 valve with its all mechanical everything clattering away under my hood!!

Me=Happy!

For me Its not the number of valves, its the electronics that come with 'em.

You cant do this with an electronic engine:

Or if you haven't seen the UK Top Gear try to kill a Yota diesel:

Ask this guy how much he likes computers:

At least it stranded him at his house, since it was 15 below zero.

In 1995 I bought a couple of Freightliners with electronic Cummins in them, lets just say it was not a pleasant ownership experience.

The simplicity and realibility of an all mechanical diesel engine is the main attraction for me. adding electronic stuff really helps a gasser, I even transplanted a fuel injected engine into my 74 Bronco, but I dont want that on a diesel, The EFI in the Bronco will crank and run with every sensor , the upper intake and 4 injectors removed.

Not after my electronic Cummins in my big trucks left me walking 3 times in one year.

Once it shut down smack in the middle of a 17 mile long bridge/causeway, because of a faulty coolant level sensor.

No shoulder to pull off onto for 8 miles, I dont care if the coolant IS a little low, I wanna be able to get someplace safe to pull over.

Well I Love the mechanical everything on my new 12 valve, as compaired to all the electronic crap on my 24 valve which is for sale and I never wanna see again  #@$%! ... . Anyways I also like the fact that any idiot can plug an edge comp into a 24 valve and... . wow I got 120 more hp, but with a 12 valver you have to actually know what your doing to adjust the timing, replace govenor springs, replace cam plates... ect, ect. :-laf

Any idiot can adjust timing, replace springs, and cam plates, so I wouldn't submit your application to mensa just yet.

Hes right, minor stuff, it takes a real mechanic to repair cracked 53 blocks, replace a VP-44 15 times in 100,000 miles, change out lift pumps along the side of the road, diagnose which %^#$&%*&%*&% electronic sensor just quit and stranded you yet AGAIN!!!!... ... . and so on... ... .....

I have'nt had to bad of luck with the reliability of my E-lectroniced out 24 valve.

Has never stranded me

Replaced the LP with a FASS at the first drop in fuel preasure

Have not had any sensors go out (yet)

An EZ, bigger injectors, more air in and out and this thing goes like crazy.

... ... ... ... 53 block to boot... ... ..... 90k

Hook a trailer to it Paul, for a few thousand miles. It will happen quietly, just a little anti freeze usage, I wonder where its going?... . :-laf

Over 40 thousand miles towed so far with loads of 4-10k and no loss of antifreez yet.

I check the level often and look at the common crack spots every few thousand... ... . but ya I hear what you're saying, sucks having to wonder like that.

Dag-nabit... ... . now you got me all paranoid  about this 53 thing again 3 weeks before I make a big trip to AK and tow down my last ball of cr*p.

I give..... I give (we need an emoticon for a guy waving a white flag :-laf )
