While at my local front end/brake shop to have new shocks installed they found that my left front wheel bearing was gone! Real wobble on the wheel.

Not wanting to drive it in that conditiioni told them to change it.

Found out that the bearings and hibs were one assembly. They made some phone calls and the cheapest one they found was from Dodge at $302, a great deal less than aftermarket.

Was he correct on the price?

Should i have saved the old hub and found a replacement bearing?

I don't know about an 02, but when I did the bearings on my 97 I got both bearings (timken) with new wheels studs for that price via ebay. Locally though, best I could do was $250 a side or something like that.

All later year Gen IIs had sealed front hubs. The shop was truthful with you.

No wheel bearing service can be done although I've read here of some using elaborate procedures to inject grease into the sealed bearings.

Sounds fair to me too. Been researching front studs. Whole other story there, but price from Napa for the "better" hub was around $300, little more with the ABS. I made my hubs greasable. Not hard at all. I can post pics and tell you how to if interested. Also a few other threads on this too.

The bearings themselves cannot be replaced, as they are NOT available separately. I bought American made Timken hubs through Amazon of all places and they were under $200 each, with free shipping. Timken HA590000 fits the truck in my signature.

I paid about $230 for the Mopar unit from Rockauto.com for my 3rd Gen. Locally they were alot more. For your shop to find them locally at that price sounds good.
