I use mothers aluminum wheel polish. just apply it with your fingers and wipe it off. works great. I'm sure there are a lot of others that work well also. I get that stuff at pep boys.

For chrome plated steel wheels, I use Bar Keepers Friend.

It's a scouring powder, sort of. You can usually find it with the Bon Ami in hardware stores, Walmart, or some grocery stores. Like Bon Ami, it won't scratch chrome the way regular scouring powder will.

Bar Keepers Friend cleans chrome and steel great. Use it with a scrub brush to get into all the crevices. It will remove rust, as it claims on the can.

I haven't tried it on aluminum yet, but for steel wheels it's great.

Mother's works for me just fine. If the wheels are really bad, just keep on rubbing. The rag will turn black. Let dry and buff, then admire the shine.

I've used both Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish and White Diamond and have found that white diamond will protect the surface a lot longer than Mothers will. It puts a coating on that acts the same as wax does on painted surfaces. In winter aluminum rims on my truck, cleaned with Mothers, would start to look dull after the first time I would drive in the salt water on the roads. In the same conditions after using White Diamond the rims would still shine after washing them off. :)
