Ive looked but haven't found any rim weight specs steel or alum. no sense in puting on tires with a 3400-3600# if the wheel can only carry 2500#

You didn't provide a clue as to what vehicle you own or are inquiring about so it's pretty difficult to answer your question.

Generally speaking, the wheel of a late model light truck from an American manufacturer was rated slightly greater than the OEM tires but probably not by much.

03' 3500 single wheel, 2wd, quad, 6 speed, 3. 73, blue, power pup, vanakin. junk factory alum wheels and factory steel wheels. no markings as to weight rating on any normally there would be. that should be enough info (this is still the 3g fourm right:rolleyes:)

Normally the weight rating is stamped in the inside of the wheel. You'll have to dismount and remove the tire to see it.

A Dodge 3500 SRW OEM tire has a weight rating of about 3,400 lbs. and the wheels are rated slightly higher.

If your goal is to increase load carrying capacity of your rear axle I think you'll have to exchange the OEM wheels and tires for 19. 5" wheels and tires. You won't be able to significantly increase tire or even wheel weight capacity in 17" sizes.

I have been asking and seeking answers to this question for a while. There are no markings of spec in either of my factory steel or factory aluminum wheels.

As far as the weight capacity of the stock size tires:

The factory size is 265/ 70/ 17. The highest Load Index available in this size rim is 121 which translates to a weight capacity of 3,197 lbs. The wheels (in either material) will be rated for at least that same amount.

Each manufacture of wheels that ship to an OEM are required to provide to the OEM that have have met the DOT standards as provided by the OEM to the wheel manufacturer... so most OEM wheels are not stamped...

Aftermarket wheels however are all usually stamped...

As an example there are some wheels for bread trucks that use a very light 19. 5" tire and with a modification of the center hole in the wheel will fit our trucks... they are usually very cheap in the wrecking yards and have a rating of only about 3000 lbs a wheel... works great on a bread truck, but not on a Dodge dually... .

One of our vendors sells wheels and we have an account with a wheel manufacturer as well... they make only OEM wheels and won't even consider making 19. 5" wheels for our trucks... they just don't see the need... .

I on the other hand have found based on 500K miles with an F550 that the most cost effective tire / wheel combination for us is the 19. 5" with Bandag caps on the back and new Michelins on the front... we easily see close to 100K miles with this combination and the cost per mile is 50 on the $1 to the 17" stuff... .

We try and keep a truck for 500K miles so the change to this wheel is by far very cost effective for us... Hope this helps.

thanks jim. I agree 19. 5 would be the way to go I just thought there might be a actual rating out for any 3g wheel. the 03 alum have nothing and the same with the 07. 5 steel. I looked up fumagalli wheels that manufacture the steel & crome clad steel but no specs. I think we need a suppler of 19. 5 to offer a more affordable wheel/tire combo and I bet they would sell more. hint hint;)

Maverick...

When I was off shore working in Europe with a casting company I came across a wheel manufacture who made wheels to DOT standards. . they made for me several sets of 19. 5" dually wheels for my trucks... I had them sent this way in a container... then the price of steel went up, the value of the dollar dropped and what was a great price vanished in a cloud... .

If and when this government of ours gets the economy out of the crapper I'll bring more in... either one (SRW or DRW) would sell for around $140 each before the upheaval. . Read, the price of steel and the dollar come back to normal, we'll bring some more in...

I just don't see that happening... anytime soon and to be honest we just can't afford to sit on a container of wheels... they have to travel with the castings...
