What's the deal with failing lift pumps?

I tried to do a search for "4an" and it wants a minimum of 4 characters.

Anyway, does anyone know or sell a 4AN to 1/8" NPT fitting? I got my Westech fuel pressure gauge and I can't install without

this adaptor on my 2000 Cummins.

Could you state the part numbers if you have them?

Thanks in advance,

Charles:)

Charles -

I'm going on a hunt this evening for that exact part (or parts). I'll let you know if I'm successful.

Thanks Zman

Zman,

Thanks.

I ended up attaching this image (my Landcruiser at Hell's Revenge in Moab) to see what the new feature on the web site did. Pretty cool. Much easier than having to reference an URL.

Charles,

I just got my Westach fuel pres. gauge on Sat. and installed it the same day. I went to a local heavy duty truck parts supply shop. They carried just what we need. I got a -4AN barbed type fitting so I could remotely mount the sender. I also got a 1/8" NPT female barbered fitting for the sender and about 3' of 300psi line to go w/ it. Others have posted that the vibration of the engine kills these sender, hence locating it somewhere else. I mounted mine over near the driver's side fire wall. HTH. The shop is Northern Virginia Supply. 301-279-2430. Let me know if you need any help.

Tom,

Thanks for the info. I wish Geno's would sell the fuel pressure gauge with all of the necessary fittings.

I do like the idea of remotely mounting the pressure sender.

Charles,

email me an address and I will ship you an Aeroquip -4AN JIC 37/45 to 1/4" hose barb brass fitting. I have some leftover from fuel pressure sender kits I was putting together. Don't have the part number handy, local distributor sells them for less than $2. 00

Dave

I think most automotive speed shops will have those fittings. Don's Hot Rod Shop in Tucson AZ had all kinds of them. I think they are the same types of fittings used for nitrous setups.

AN flare fittings are different than brass fittings. It has to do with the angle not sure what they are but I know by a massive transmission fluid leak they are different. I don't think there is an AN fitting available for under $2 lol(if you have ever bought it you know what I mean!) you might get lucky and have it work ok since the fuel is at a low PSI and not high psi like my transmission line was

You can get any kind of AN fitting from Earls Performance Products. Their part number for a 4AN to 1/8 npt adapter is #961604. I'm on the east coast. The closest Earls Service Shop to me is in Indianapolis, 317-241-0318, though they ship nation-wide.

If you guys are planning on using the -AN fitting on the fuel pressure test port (Schrader valve), this is not a correct application. Bad340fish has it correct. The -AN fittings are a 37-degree angle whereas our (newer trucks) test valves have a very small sealing surface which is cut at 45-degrees. People have reported that mashing it on there will seal it, but I would suggest taking your time and plumb it right.

If I misunderstood where the -AN fitting is going to be used, just ingnore this message.

:( No Dave, you heard right. I did use the -AN fitting on the test port and it doesn't leak. However I would like to do it correctly, so what is the proper fitting to use there? Do they make 45* fitting or do we need to replace the banjo bolt entirely? Which I hope to do soon when Ray has his fittings available.

TIA Tom

The Aeroquip Performance Products catalog as well as their tech support folks state that their SAE 37 JIC/AN fittings will seal either 37 or 45 male flares. Don't have the part numbers here at work, I will look them up when I get home. I haven't had any problems with mine leaking. When I took my adapter off my old truck you could see where the cone of the test port and the flare of the adapter had seated, looked like a nice clean metal to metal seal.

Test port fittings are -4 size, the cone is 45 degrees. Like the old R12 ports. I haven't seen any 45 degree to pipe fittings on the web sites or catalogs I have looked at, anyone know where to find some.

Dave

i would also like the proper fittings for my truck. i have a ?. does the fitting have to depress the inside of the schrader valve? i tracked down the snap-on guy today and he wants $20 for the fitting but you need his guage kit for it to work.

You can order the fittings for the test ports from any NAPA. It looked like they get their stuff from Earl's. They had a -4AN female fitting with a 1/4" hose barb on the other end. Not sure of the flare though. Mine should show up tomorrow, so I'll let you know.

The fittings for my Stewart Warner sender were all 1/8"npt. I bought the fittings for that side from a plumbing supply house. I couldn't find a brass 1/8"npt female with a 1/4" hose barb, so I bought the male version and a 1/8"npt brass coupler.

I had our mechanical department examine the Schrader valve and it is definitely a 45-degree cone. Additionally, it is of a smaller surface area than usual to accomidate the inner core. It is probably only intended as a temporary mate for a fuel pressure gauge that has a rubber seal.

I ended up tapping the "plain" banjo bolt under the fuel filter with a 1/16" NPT tap. I then added Autometer's 1/16" Male NPT to 1/8" Female NPT adapter (ATM-3280). This allowed me to run a fuel hose to a remotely mounted electrical fuel pressure sensor. Works great without gauge fluctuations. The additional benefit is that I have retained the stock Schrader valves just in case the dealer has to check the fuel pressure. I don't know what the dealer would do if you were trying to get an injection pump replaced under warrantee, and there were no provisions for his gauges?

I think that Ray has a very clean solution with his custom made hi-flow banjos. I will be ordering a set myself just in case I decide to upgrade later.

I also think that Brandon has some very nice solutions, especially for those wishing to replace the entire fuel lines.

I also believe that there are many others that have other "correct" solutions, but I do not agree that a reliable seal can be made with the test port.

I would like to stress the importance of the remote mounting of the fuel pressure sensor, however. Too close to the injection pump, and the pulses created will be very hard on the transducer. I also believe that the engine vibration will also be detrimental to the longevity of the average sensor.

well earls and xrp claim to seal 37 and 45 degree fittings, I have a cute little setup for stock guys, its not just an adaptor though it has a swivel, so lots a flexibility comes with it , I like an upgraded line set with pre and post fuel pressure

thats a hot setup

later B... ... ... ... ...

Dave D,

I got the fitting today. Thanks a bunch. I'll be ready to install the gauge after I get some more fitting at the local hardware store. Does it matter what type of hose I use to remotely mount the FP sender?

Thanks again...
