I finally called ISSPRO regarding my tach install, and the adaptor kit (R8912-92) is $44 and some change. Not exactly what I want to be spending on that kind of stuff now. (or ever, for that matter). ANyway, I tried Diesel Injection Service, where I have gotten my ISSPRO stuff from before, but they appear to no longer carry ISSPRO gauges. Checked Genos, and they dont have tachs listed. I realize I should call, but it will probably be Monday before anyone is open again, with the holiday and all, and it's 5'oclock now.

Daniel when I got my first Isspro tach. I bought the wiring kit with it. All it had in it was a small 4 conductor wire bundle and 4 small female spade terminals. Nothing else. It was not worth the $35. I payed for it.

What model is the tach?

This is what I heard also. I know the 93 trucks have a connector and you can just splice into those wires or use small blade terminals. I think there's 4 wires, ground, ignition hot, signal and lights.

I tried wiring it up directly, and get nothing. I can make the needle jump around if I wiggle the ground on a cab ground, instead of plugging it into the spade connector in the plug in. I know the ground (in the conector) is good, cause when I jump the 12v to the ground, it lights up. I read in an older thread that there is a filter in the harness that allows use with a Dodge PCM controlled tach. Dieselman359 also says he went through the same stuff and had no luck til he ordered the adaptor kit. I am tempted to go back to the magnets and second sensor on the H-balancer, but that is so sensitive to voltage regulation- I had a 50rpm variation in my 91, depending on what the volt reg was doing at the given point in time- gauge read anywhere from 13. 5-14. 5volts, regardless of VR.

Thanks for the suggestions,

DP

Try Dieselmanor.com they have really good prices on isspro products. You will have to email them with the part # not listed on site.

I have a '92 with the tach wiring to which I added an Issopro tach. I just plugged it in and it worked. I don't remember any problems or a filter or anything but I'll look at mine when the sun comes up. I did have to add or do something to the back of the tach now that I think about it. I'll dig out the instructions and see what it says. I remember the first time I hooked it up it didn't work and then called and switched something and its been fine since.

The only weird stuff it does is that sometimes at startup it won't register for a few seconds or flutters but it recovers and works fine after that. I just figure its not a morning tach...

Dug out my paperwork. Mine's a 5503 Daniel, the R8912-92 kit was $19 a year or so ago and like Philip says its just stuff you already have laying around and not worth the $$.

My instructions say:

Black = ground and hooks to the black in the 4 pin under-dash connector

Green = lamp (+) and hooks to the orange lead

Red = DC (+) switch and hooks the "other" black

White = signal and hooks to the Grey/lt blue

This last wire is what messed me up. Instructions said not to use the yellow which "Ys" off the white wire (which has a filter). Didn't work until I unplugged the white wire & filter and used the yellow instead. Also came with a resistor for 24v applications.

tach

Daniel,I know it's a tough pill to swallow but I just went ahead and bought the harness, plugged it in,and never looked back. Works like a champ. unclemarc

Tach

Daniel,

I bought my Tach (8503) and the harness at the same time, plugged it in and had absolutely no problems with it, works fine. I know the cost seems high but your time saved must be worth something.

Almost forgot to mention, I purchased my tach and harness from Diesel Manor.

flathead6- I've hooked them up just that way, and I still have nothing. I am going to test voltage and whatnot coming out of the grey wire and see if it increases steadily or spikes, what have you.

When I did mine - last century :D - my kit - from Banks - included a resistor that pluged into the wiring harness. Issopros may include this built into it. Just a thought. BTW my tach has worked quite well for about 180,000 miles.
