Which automatic tramsmissions seem to hold up the best? I am in the market for a wrecked 12 valve and want the one with most reliable transmission. The wreck will be the donor for my Suburban hybrid.

Nate:

I have a "Pro-Torque" converter and
"BD" Transmission/Valve Body and have
had good luck with it. However, Bill
Kondolay at DTT (Diesel Transmission
Technology) seems to have the "ultimate"
set-up right now with his newer TC and
VB design.

So are we asking for the best way to fix up a stock dodge transmission attached to the cummins? -- DTT!!

Or are we asking for the best transmission, BRAND/MODEL, that can be bolt up?

I agree my trans has been reworked with tst's shift kit and rebuild kit but I got a DTT torque convertor ( I cooked the first 3 that were not DTT's) and what a difference both towing and not it is a heck of an improvement.

NATE Skate,
Looking at 96 shop manual 46RE and 47RE are listed. (42RE seems to be for the 1/2 tons)
I take it the 47RE is for the one ton even though both trans share the same repair section.
The 47 should have slightly larger parts/components than the 46.
This should be OK to move around the suburban
Unless they have newer version in later models.
If used for pulling modications should be thought of being done in the future.
Of course finding a used Allison mite be the way to go.
Better yet a 5-spd. #ad

Thanx for help. THe SUburban is a 94. I've got a guy that buys wrecks and rebuilds for a living and he says that he can find me anything I want as long as I can drive and pick it up (and afford it). I am just wondering what 12valve transmission combo I should look for. I do neeed an auto. This will be my wifes car too. The suburban will only be towing a 22' RV a couple of weeks a year and a 21' boat 8 or 10 times a summer. The rest of the year it will be used to get grocerys and drop kids at school. And of course impress Cummins diesel fans statewide. So do I need the heavy duty rebuild that you all have mentioned? Or would a less expensive rebuild be adequete? The donor wreck that I will probably be looking for will have around 100 to 110k miles on it. I'm basically wanting something as close to reliable as the motor. (must be dreaming)

The 47RH from the '94 or '95 would probably work better for you. It has less electronics to deal with. There is a solenoid for the OD and one for the TCC lockup. Everything else is controlled by hydraulics. You might want to look at the CPM for the transmission and see what sort of inputs it needs to control the OD and lockup. I dunno, but CPM may be adaptable to your Burb. For just ordinary running around with a stock engine the stock trans should be ok. It might be a good idea to overhaul it, especially if it has many miles.
